Dialed In impresses in troubled debut

"He's a horse that's got a future," trainer Nick Zito said after Dialed In won his maiden Friday at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When the Kentucky Derby is run next May, it will have been 20 years since Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito won his first with Strike the Gold. It’s far too early to tell if Zito will be able to celebrate by returning with a legitimate contender for the 137th Derby, but it would not seem a huge upset if a colt named Dialed In is here to represent him and longtime client Robert LaPenta.

Shamundi faces tough invader in Dennis Dodge

Trainer Ben Root wouldn’t mind if lightning struck again in Wednesday’s $15,000 Dennis Dodge Memorial at Portland Meadows.

He sends out Shamundi, an Oct. 20 debut winner, against six rivals in the 5 1/2-furlong race for 2-year-olds. It’s the same pattern as last year, when he won the race with Smoken Sham, a debut winner who was also making his second start.

Root said the race holds significance for him beyond the purse and stakes prestige.

Barracks Road drops in class for Jammed Lovely Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Barracks Road takes a noteworthy drop in class for Wednesday’s $150,000 Jammed Lovely Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack and should be the prohibitive favorite in the seven-furlong sprint for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies.

Barracks Road seemingly found her calling on the grass last summer, when she captured two one-mile stakes in front-running style, the Ontario Damsel and the Ontario Colleen.

Tajaaweed a contender for Peitz

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dan Peitz still has his Arkansas accent despite spending the better part of the last 30 years in New York, first as an assistant under Joe Cantey before opening a public stable in 1987. Mostly for family reasons, Peitz decided last winter to return to his roots, and now his annual circuit consists of Oaklawn Park in the winter, Arlington Park in the summer, and Keeneland and Churchill Downs in the spring and fall.

“My parents live in Hot Springs, and they’re not getting any younger,” said Peitz, 53. “It was the best decision for me.”
