Valenzuela due back at Santa Anita on Thursday

Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who took off his Santa Anita mounts on Sunday, complaining of body soreness from a spill on Saturday,  is expected to return to riding on Thursday, the next day of live racing in Southern California, where he is booked to ride two of the eight races on a program plagued by short fields.

In Saturday’s eighth race, Valenzuela was unseated when She’ll Heir clipped heels at the start of the Sweet Life Stakes on the hillside turf course. Valenzuela rose under his own power, but did not ride the last race.

Euroears a candidate for Dubai trip

ARCADIA, Calif – Euroears, the upset winner of Saturday’s Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita, may be bound for Dubai in March.

Trainer Bob Baffert, whose stable is off to an electrifying start in 2011, said on Sunday that Euroears is a candidate for the $2 million Golden Shaheen for sprinters at Meydan Racecourse on March 26.

“He ran like he’s worked,” Baffert said. “I thought he’d run well if he ran to his back class. When he was 4, he looked like he’d be the best sprinter in the country.

Brown ready for turf or dirt in Gulfstream allowance feature

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.– Upgrade has been a model of consistency as well as a source of frustration for trainer Chad Brown since beginning his 3-year-old campaign here at Gulfstream Park last spring. Upgrade will attempt to make up for his performance as the beaten favorite here three weeks ago when he heads a well-matched field of older, first-level allowance horses in Wednesday’s $51,500 feature at one mile on turf.

Upgrade finished second, beaten two lengths by a loose-on the-lead Doctor Peach, when bet to 8-5 going 1 1/16 miles under similar allowance conditions on Jan. 5.

Navarro gets off to great start at Tampa Bay

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Trainer Jorge Navarro is off to a hot start at Tampa Bay Downs. A Panamanian native who began training on his own three years ago, Navarro has sent out 6 winners from just 16 starters for a sizzling win percentage of 37 percent and three of his other starters have finished second.

Navarro is the stepson of Julian Canet and step-grandson of Oswaldo Canet, who won training titles at River Downs and Beulah Park in the 1960s and 1970s. Navarro says he was around horses and horsemen from an early age.

Drop from graded stakes helps It Tiz get the job done in Megahertz

ARCADIA, Calif.- It Tiz had no success against California’s top 3-year-old fillies last year, losing four graded stakes.

For her 4-year-old debut in Sunday’s $79,150 Megahertz Stakes at Santa Anita, she faced one of the circuit’s top older turf females in Eclair de Lune. This time, It Tiz was more than up to the task.

Angel At Home deals Paloma Mesa first loss in El Paso Times

Angel At Home might have punched her ticket to the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks on Sunday, when she was up for a neck win over the previously undefeated Paloma Mesa in the $50,000 El Paso Times. The Oaks, which is one of the premier races of the Sunland Park meet, will be run on March 27. It will be a consideration for Angel at Home, according to her trainer, Johnnie Nall.

Stephanie Got Even steps up to stakes to win fifth straight in American Beauty

HOT SPRINGS, Ark.- Stephanie Got Even withstood a lengthy objection to win her fifth straight race Sunday in the $50,000 American Beauty at Oaklawn Park. She was making her stakes debut in the six-furlong race for fillies and mares and won by a length over pacesetter Cosmo Girl. It was another three-quarters of a length back  to Vertical Vision.

All Florida-bred lineup for Sunshine Millions Classic

The West Coast-based Cigar Man is among a field of 10 for the Sunshine Millions Classic.

A field of 10, all Florida-breds, was entered Sunday for the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Classic. The Classic is one of three Sunshine Millions races to be run at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, with three others to be run across the country at Santa Anita, headed by the $300,000 Turf,

The Sunshine Millions, which offers a total of $1.8 million in purses, is restricted to Florida-breds and California-breds but no Cal-breds were entered for the Classic.

Taptam conquers males in Star of Texas

Cliff Berry guides Taptam to a 4 1/4-length victory in the Star of Texas.

Taptam launched what promises to be another strong season of racing Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park, when she left a nice group of male rivals in her wake to win the $100,000 Star of Texas by 4 1/4  lengths.

The 1 1/16-mile  race was the highlight of a seven-stakes program for horses bred in Texas. The races were worth a cumulative $400,000, and the Texas Champions Day card made for the richest program of the Sam Houston meet that opened on Friday.
