Stakes sprinters get a spot at Golden Gate

Golden Gate Fields has carded a stakes-quality allowance sprint on Thursday. The six-furlong race is the first on the card and has a field of five that comprises the comebackers Shudacudawudya, Paul’s Hope and Summer Excess, as well as Restless Youth and Our Minesweeper.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Sunday’s $250,000 Santa Monica Stakes for female sprinters has a likely field of seven – Gilded Gem, Mother Ruth, Pica Slew, Pinkarella, Quisisana, Sweet August Moon, and Switch.

Two fillies and mares ran out of time to make the Grade 1 race over seven furlongs.

Trainer John Sadler said that Mona de Momma, the winner of the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes at Churchill Downs in her last start on May 1, will not be ready.

“She’s one work short,” Sadler said.

Garcia settles paperwork, returns at Santa Anita

Martin Garcia has settled his visa problems and will ride Thursday for the first time since November.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Martin Garcia has spent the last few days jump-starting his career in Southern California. After missing more than two months of racing because of visa problems, Garcia, 26, resumes riding at Santa Anita on Thursday.

Garcia rides El Martillo in the seventh race on Thursday. He has one mount on Friday, Dixie Commander in the sixth race.

Timing works out at Aqueduct for Inherit the Gold

Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. warmed up for Amen Hallelujah’s much-anticipated return in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint by sending out Stradavinsky to capture Sunday’s Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint. Stradivinsky, making his first start since finishing next to last in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, outfinished the slow-starting Great Attack by 1 1/4 lengths to register his second win in four starts since being claimed by Dutrow for $50,000 at Churchill Downs last May.

Fawkes has busy Sunshine Millions day ahead

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer David Fawkes won’t have very long to bask in the glow of accepting his first Eclipse Award after Big Drama was named champion sprinter in 2010 at last week’s ceremonies here in Miami. There is plenty of business to take care of on both coasts on Saturday, with Fawkes starting three horses in the Sunshine Millions, including Duke of Mischief in the main event, the $500,000 Classic, to be decided this year at Gulfstream Park.

J P's Gusto works seven furlongs for Robert Lewis

 J P’s Gusto worked seven furlongs in 1:25.40 on Monday at Santa Anita, preparing for his expected 3-year-old debut in the $250,000 Robert Lewis Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 12.

Trainer David Hofmans said that JP’s Gusto worked the final quarter-mile in 23.20 seconds. JP’s Gusto was ridden in the workout by Iggy Puglisi.

“He loves this track,” Hofmans said. “Iggy said he goes so effortlessly over it.”

Talamo has nice Sunshine Millions lineup

The California-based jockey with arguably the best book of rides for Saturday’s Santa Anita Sunshine Millions races is Joe Talamo.

Talamo will ride Caracortado in the $300,000 Turf over 1 1/8 miles, All Due Respect in the Distaff and Cost of Freedom in the Sprint. All three will be short prices, or in the case of Cost of Freedom, favored, in the races for California-breds and Florida-breds.

Sunday, Talamo was aboard All Due Respect for her final prerace workout, a half-mile in 51.80 seconds.
