Jolly Banner goes for fourth straight in Beas River Handicap

Jolly Banner, unbeaten in three starts during the current Hong Kong season, is the 133-pound top weight in Saturday’s $225,684 Beas River Handicap for turf sprinters at Sha Tin Racecourse.

Jolly Banner, a 5-year-old Australian-bred gelding, will break from post 11 in a field of 12 and is well-suited to the race distance of seven furlongs on turf. Jolly Banner won seven-furlong handicaps on turf at Sha Tin on Oct. 8, Nov. 6, and Nov. 27. In each race, Jolly Banner stalked the pace and won by more than a length.

Meydan: Reynaldothewizard tries to win Dubawi Stakes for third time

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Reynaldothewizard won his second consecutive Dubawi Stakes in 2016.

It can seem, at times, that winter after winter you’re watching the same horses run around the Meydan Racecourse oval in Dubai. And in the case of Reynaldothewizard, you are.

Reynaldothewizard is one of seven horses entered in the co-featured Dubawi Stakes on the eight-race Thursday card at Meydan. The gelding is 11 years old. An American-bred by Speightstown, he made his career debut during the summer of 2008 at Churchill Downs. This, remarkably, is his seventh season racing in Dubai, and even last year, as a 10-year-old, he was pretty good.

Le Bernardin repeats in Round 1 of Al Maktoum Challenge

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Le Bernardin scores by two lengths under Tadgh O’Shea in Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge.

It was a good start to the Dubai World Cup Carnival for trainer Ali al Raihy, who saddled Le Bernardin to win the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 for the second year in a row. Al Raihy also trains Ertijaal, one of the top turf sprinters in Dubai, who got his campaign started with a sharp win in a handicap Thursday night at Meydan Racecourse.
