Le Bernardin repeats in Round 1 of Al Maktoum Challenge

Andrew Watkins/Dubai Racing Club
Le Bernardin scores by two lengths under Tadgh O’Shea in Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge.

It was a good start to the Dubai World Cup Carnival for trainer Ali al Raihy, who saddled Le Bernardin to win the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 for the second year in a row. Al Raihy also trains Ertijaal, one of the top turf sprinters in Dubai, who got his campaign started with a sharp win in a handicap Thursday night at Meydan Racecourse.

The 11-meeting 2017 Dubai World Cup Carnival starts Thursday night at Meydan Racecourse, where Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge headlines a seven-race card.

There are Carnival cards every Thursday night at Meydan this week through Feb. 23, followed by the Super Saturday program on March 4 and the Dubai World Cup card three weeks later, on March 25. That program includes the $10 million World Cup, won in exciting fashion last year by California Chrome, as well as a pair of $6 million turf races, the Dubai Turf and the Sheema Classic.

Hong Kong: Molly's Jade Star on an upward trajectory

The trainer Rickey P.F. Yiu appears to have found the keys to the 5-year-old Australian-bred gelding Molly’s Jade Star. The first was blinkers, which went on to positive effect six starts ago. The second was Happy Valley Racecourse.

After 17 Hong Kong starts at Sha Tin, Yiu gave Molly’s Jade Star an entry at Happy Valley on Oct. 30. Now Molly’s Jade Star has won two races in a row and looks very much the one to beat in the featured eighth race on Thursday night at Happy Valley.
