Dragon General has right rider for Wong Nai Chung Gap Handicap

Dragon General will be ridden by the hot rider in Hong Kong in Wednesday’s $224,592 Wong Nai Chung Gap Handicap for turf sprinters at Happy Valley Racecourse.

On Sunday, jockey Umberto Rispoli recorded the second four-win day of his career in Hong Kong at Sha Tin Racecourse, benefiting by the absence of top jockeys Joao Moreira and Zac Purton, who were in Japan. Those riders are in action at Happy Valley on Wednesday, but Rispoli and Dragon General have a history that makes the 5-year-old gelding a contender in the 12-horse field.

Brametot narrowly prevails as French Derby favorite

Brametot, the winner of the Group 1 French 2000 Guineas last month, confirmed his status as France’s leading 3-year-old with an impressive winning rally in the final quarter-mile of Sunday’s Group 1 French Derby at Chantilly Racecourse.

Ridden by Cristian Demuro, Brametot closed from last to catch 7-1 Waldgeist and win by a short head. Recoletos, a Group 2 winner in May, finished third at 4-1. Formally known as the Prix du Jockey Club, the French Derby was worth approximately $1,690,200.

Satono Aladdin's upset earns him berth in BC Mile

Satono Aladdin, an 11-1 outsider, rallied from off the pace to score an upset win in Sunday’s Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen for turf milers at Tokyo Racecourse, earning an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 4.

It was not immediately clear whether Satono Aladdin would be sent to California this fall. In post-race comments, trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said overseas options “are there to be discussed with the owners.”

Wings of Eagles pulls off a shocker in Epsom Derby

Aidan O’Brien winning the Epsom Derby? No surprise.

Aidan O’Brien winning the Epsom Derby on Saturday at Epsom Downs with a horse named Wings of Eagles ridden by a jockey named Padraig Beggy? Big surprise.

Wings of Eagles was a 40-1 shot in England and paid $113.20 in U.S. betting after coming from second to last in an 18-horse field under the obscure Beggy to cut down his far more heralded stablemate Cliffs of Moher in the final strides.

Americans now getting the Royal treatment at Ascot

Ten years ago, a small subset of American horsemen might have tuned in to watch the big races run at the Royal Ascot meeting each June in England.

A decade later, an American trainer with a high-class turf horse thriving during the spring probably is at least considering going to Ascot to race.

It’s getting to the point where there are nearly as many Americans shipping overseas for Royal Ascot as Europeans shipping overseas for the Breeders’ Cup: The American invasion for the Royal meeting that runs June 20-24 could number as many as 15 or 16.
