Churchill Downs Inc. chosen to build Indiana casino

The Indiana Gaming Commission has selected a proposal from Churchill Downs Inc. for a casino near Terre Haute after rejecting a settlement offer from the previous holder of the license.

The Churchill proposal for a casino and hotel was selected over three other applicants. On Monday, the commission had voted down a settlement offer that would have allowed the previous license holder, Lucy Luck, which is headed by a Terre Haute businessman, to retain a license for a proposed casino. The commission had earlier voted not to renew the license, which was first awarded in 2019.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Over the past two and a half years, major racing jurisdictions across the U.S. have individually contemplated changes to their rules that would restrict the use of the whip in races, gathering together supporters and opponents to argue over the endless pros and cons before going through the oftentimes arduous process of crafting and approving new rules. California, Kentucky, New Jersey, and a handful of mid-Atlantic tracks, among others, have all adopted sets of rules that limit the use of the whip in significant ways.

N.Y. Gaming Commission declines to address rules on quarantine

Trainer Ken McPeek sought an examination of New York Racing Association rules after he was denied the entry of seven horses during the Saratoga meet while his stable was in quarantine.

The New York Gaming Commission on Monday declined to take any action on a request from trainer Ken McPeek for the commission to examine the rules of entry at the tracks operated by the New York Racing Association so that horses coming out of quarantine would be eligible to enter races prior to the quarantine expiring.

Handle jumped 22.5 percent in October, aided by two extra weekend dates

Total handle on U.S. races held in October was up 22.5 percent compared to the same month in 2019, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, according to figures released on Friday by Equibase, but the enormous jump was due, in part, by the inclusion of two additional weekend dates this year compared to two years ago.

October of this year had 10 weekend dates, compared to eight in 2019. Handle on weekends is far higher than handle on weekdays.

CDI net income up 42 percent in third quarter

Churchill Downs Inc., the racetrack and casino operator based in Louisville, Ky., had net income of $61.4 million in the third quarter of 2021, up 42 percent compared to net income of $43.1 million last year, according to financial documents released late on Wednesday.
