Racing Symposium: Handle growth, lower fatalities, robust sales cause for optimism

Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority: Claiming-race purse ratio rule dropped

November U.S. handle inches up compared to 2019

Total handle on Thoroughbred races held at U.S. racetracks was up marginally in November when compared to the same month of 2019, prior to the coronavirus pandemic disrupting economic and social conditions across the world.

Total handle during November was $961.8 million, a jump of less than one percent compared to total handle of $955.8 million in November of 2019, according to figures distributed by Equibase. November of this year had eight weekend dates, compared to nine weekend dates in November of 2019.

Streaming available for University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing

Panel discussions and presentations at the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing next week will be available on live-streams for a fee, a racing broadcast company announced Monday.

Roberts Communications Network will stream the discussions on its website, Roberts Television Network, for a fee of $195, the company said. The symposium is scheduled for Dec. 6-8 in Tucson, Ariz.

Del Giudice retires as NYRA chairman, will be replaced by Holliday

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Michael Del Giudice is retiring from his role as chairman of the New York Racing Association’s Board of Directors and will be replaced by Marc Holliday, the company announced in a press release Wednesday.

Holliday, 55, was appointed by the board’s executive committee to serve as an interim chairman before a full meeting of the NYRA board on Dec. 16 at which time it is expected the interim tag will be removed and Holliday will be voted the new chairman.

Brad Cox named 2021 Big Sport of Turfdom Award winner

Brad Cox snagged another trainer title, taking the Ellis Park meet with 23 winners.

Trainer Brad Cox has joined a Who’s Who of racing personalities in being honored by the Turf Publicists of America (TPA) with their prestigious Big Sport of Turfdom Award for 2021.

Cox was selected for enhancing coverage of Thoroughbred racing through his cooperation with media and racing publicists.

“Brad’s generosity with his time, allowing his story, as well as his horses’ stories, to be shared with the fans of our sport is the epitome of what the award stands for,” said TPA president Wendy Davis in a release this week.

'Weighted' testing to be major part of HISA program

The United States Anti-Doping Agency would determine which horses are selected for post-race and out-of-competition testing under proposed rules released on Monday, in a departure from the current practice in most states of mandating that certain horses are automatically selected for testing, such as winners of races.

New York state senator introduces fixed-odds betting bill for mobile

A New York state senator has introduced a bill that would allow fixed-odds bets on horse races to be offered by licensed mobile sports-betting operators.

Sen. Joseph Addabbo, the chairman of the New York Senate Committee on Racing, Gaming, and Wagering, introduced the bill on Monday, sending it the Senate Committee on Rules. The legislature is not scheduled to re-convene until January.
