Grade 1 winner One in Vermillion retired after injury

One in Vermillion captured his lone Grade 1 victory this summer at Saratoga, taking the Allen Jerkens.

One in Vermillion, the winner of the Grade 1 Allen Jerkens Stakes at Saratoga in August and stakes in three other states, has been retired after sustaining a fetlock injury in a workout at Zia Park earlier this month.

Owner Jonathan Kalman said on Friday that One in Vermillion underwent successful surgery on Nov. 6, two days after the injury was diagnosed, but that the injury will prevent the colt from returning to racing.

Kalman said he has held discussions with stallion farms about a stud deal for One in Vermillion, but that no deal has been finalized.

RTN to offer streaming of University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing

Racetrack Television Network, a subscription television and streaming service, will offer livestreams of the panels at the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing again this year, the company announced Tuesday.

The package will be available for $149, RTN said, with all proceeds contributed to the Race Track Industry Program, the educational program at Arizona that administers the annual conference. The package will enable buyers to watch the panels on tablets, smartphones, personal computers, and on televisions equipped with Roku or Amazon Fire devices.

Antonucci to receive Big Sport of Turfdom Award

Trainer Jena Antonucci will receive the Big Sport of Turfdom Award on Dec. 5.

Jena Antonucci, the trainer of Belmont and Travers winner Arcangelo, has been named the recipient of the Big Sport of Turfdom by the award’s administrator, the Turf Publicists of America.

Antonucci, who is a brand ambassador for Daily Racing Form, became the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race when Arcangelo won the Belmont this year. The 47-year-old so far has 15 wins this year from 104 starts and $2.1 million in purse earnings.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has proposed amending its rules for violations of the estrus suppressant altrenogest that will move the drug from its banned category to its controlled substances list, a policy change that will lead to far less severe penalties for positives in male horses, according to a list of proposed changes HISA posted on its website on Monday.

Alex Foley hired as Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association executive director

Alex Foley, the son of trainer Greg Foley and a graduate of the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, has been hired as the executive director of the Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, the organization announced Tuesday.

Foley, who started Monday, fills a position that was vacated when the Kentucky HBPA’s longtime executive director, Marty Maline, retired at the end of 2022. Maline was the executive director for 46 years.

Del Mar to host back-to-back Breeders’ Cups in 2024, 2025

Del Mar will host the Breeders' Cup for the third and fourth times in 2024 and 2025.

Del Mar, which is already set to host the 2024 Breeders’ Cup, also will host the 2025 Breeders’ Cup, it was announced via press release Wednesday afternoon.

The Breeders’ Cup was previously held at Del Mar in 2017 and 2021. In 2024, the Breeders’ Cup will be held Nov. 1-2. In 2025, the event will be held on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The last time the Breeders’ Cup was held at the same venue in consecutive years was Santa Anita in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Santa Anita held the 40th Breeders’ Cup last weekend for a record 11th time.

Vote to extend Arizona simulcast coming Friday

The Arizona Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association is scheduled to vote on Friday on whether to extend an agreement with Turf Paradise allowing the track to import full-card simulcast signals, according to Arizona HBPA officials and the track.

The current extension, signed in late September after a potential buyer suddenly emerged for the track, expires on Nov. 12. If an extension is not granted, full-card simulcasting, including account wagering, would shut down in the state, where dozens of restaurants and bars offer off-track betting to patrons.
