Racing Symposium: CAWs could face more guardrails on play in future

TUCSON, Ariz. – Computerized account-wagering companies that pour billions of dollars a year into U.S. racing pools aren’t going away, but they may face guardrails on their play in the future, according to officials who spoke at the closing Tuesday session at the Global Symposium on Racing.

The panel session was the third this year at racing conferences to examine the impact of CAWs on racing’s parimutuel pools, following the publication in the spring of a long-form piece in The Financial Times detailing CAW play. The author of that piece, Oliver Roeder, moderated the panel.

Jockey Mike Luzzi retires, will become agent for son Lane

After a 35-year career, where he amassed more than 3,500 wins, jockey Mike Luzzi has announced his retirement to become an agent for his son Lane.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Mike Luzzi, the Eclipse Award winning apprentice jockey of 1989 and a winner of more than 3,500 races, announced his retirement from riding Saturday. Luzzi will become the agent for his son Lane, who has based at Aqueduct since October.

“It was his idea,” Mike Luzzi, 54, said of becoming his son’s agent. “Reluctantly, I’m going to finish my career. It’s tough, I still felt like I had a comeback in me.”

Deadline for report on future of Maryland racing extended to Jan. 5

The state’s racing constituents have indicated that they favor the consolidation of racing at Pimlico in Baltimore.

The deadline for the release of a state-sanctioned report examining the long-term options for Maryland’s racing industry has been extended until Jan. 5, according to officials with knowledge of the decision.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the extension has not yet been announced, said that the deadline was extended to give the state agency, the Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority, more time to consider its work. By legislation, the MTROA was supposed to deliver its report to the legislature by Dec. 1.
