Fans crowd Golden Gate for one last memory

Shane Micheli/Vassar Photography
After 83 years of racing, Golden Gate Fields ran its final race Sunday, leaving uncertainty for Northern California racing.

More than an hour after Sunday’s first race, the line of cars stretched from the nearby freeway, down a short road and up the long hill leading to the public parking lots at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, Calif.

Normally, cars pull into the racetrack as if a person was going into a shopping center on a Tuesday morning. The last day of racing at the historic Bay Area track was different. Getting in more resembled the traffic jam before a big sporting event.

The track announced an ontrack attendance of 5,936. The crowd on the previous Sunday was 1,424.

Louisiana votes to rescind new drug regulation rules

Barbara D. Livingston
After an emergency vote, Louisiana has taken back the new rules on medication that were put into place in April.

The Louisiana Racing Commission on Friday wholly rescinded a bloc of new medication regulations set to go into effect on Saturday in an acknowledgement that the blowback to the rules would have dramatically weakened the state’s racing product and isolated the state’s Thoroughbreds.

The commission voted swiftly on Friday to rescind the new rules through an emergency meeting conducted via video-streaming service that lasted six minutes. The vote was unanimous, including from three veterinarians on the commission who were the prime consultants for the new rules.

Horses from Louisiana to HISA tracks will be placed on vets’ list

Barbara D. Livingston
Under new HISA regulations, horses coming from Louisiana tracks will be required to be placed on the vets’ list.

Horses shipping from the state of Louisiana to tracks under the jurisdiction of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority will be required to be placed on the vets’ list beginning on June 9, according to a memo HISA sent to tracks and racing officials on Wednesday.

HISA announced the policy in advance of new medication rules set to go into effect in Louisiana on June 8. The new medication rules, which were passed on an emergency basis in April, pose “significant risks to both equine welfare and the integrity of Thoroughbred racing,” HISA said in the memo.
