American Horse Council names Broadway as president

Julie Broadway, the executive director of the American Morgan Horse Association and Educational Charitable Trust since 2007, has been named to succeed Jay Hickey as president of the American Horse Council, the AHC announced on Friday.

Broadway, who has bachelor’s degrees in psychology and industrial relations and a master’s of business administration, will take the helm of the AHC as of July 1. Hickey, who has been president of the AHC since 1993 and on the AHC staff since 1989, announced earlier this year that he would retire June 30.

NYRA's early reorganization plan focuses on board makeup

NEW YORK -- The reprivatization plan the New York Racing Association will submit to the state legislature next week will only deal with a governance structure for the company but will not contain any other proposals regarding the long-term future of the organization or racing.

The NYRA Reorganization Board will offer Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state leaders two options for the re-configuration of a NYRA board when and if the state agrees to revert NYRA back to private control which it is expected to do later this year.

Stewards order purse of Soviet Problem Stakes to be redistributed

ARCADIA, Calif. - A portion of the purse of the $100,500 Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos last December has been ordered redistributed after third-place finisher Run for Retts tested positive for the prohibited substances methamphetamine and amphetamine, according to a ruling released by Santa Anita stewards on Friday.

Run For Retts earned $12,000, which has been ordered forfeited. The order of finish has been revised to reflect Baby Bea Scattin, Yodelsong, Lucky to Win,  and All in the End as the third- through sixth-place finishers.

No radical changes expected on NYRA reorganization plan

The board of directors of the New York Racing Association is expected next week to discuss a reorganization plan that is designed to set the association’s course and structure for when the state’s control over the board is taken back later this year, and indications so far are that the plan will not contain any radical changes.

Horsemen groups vie for control at Arlington

CHICAGO – The Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Arlington International still have no contract in place governing Arlington’s race meet that starts May 6, and Arlington could attempt to partner with a different horsemen’s organization, the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation, in an apparent effort to circumvent the ITHA.

Earle Mack donates $100K to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation

Earle Mack, the Thoroughbred owner-breeder, has donated $100,000 to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation in memory of former Jockey Club chairman Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, who died on Wednesday, the foundation announced Friday.

In a release, Mack said that he donated the money as a tribute to Phipps, who was instrumental in establishing the foundation and supporting its causes while chairman of the Jockey Club from 1983-2015. Mack is a member of the Jockey Club and was also a board member of the New York Racing Association with Phipps.

Massachusetts horsemen propose equine center with new racetrack

Organizations representing horse breeds across Massachusetts will join together to support the construction of an equine center in the state that would also include a racetrack to replace Suffolk Downs, officials of the group leading the effort announced on Tuesday.

California Authority of Racing Fairs executive director Chris Korby to retire

California Authority of Racing Fairs executive director Chris Korby announced on Tuesday that he will retire on Nov. 1. Korby has been involved with the fairs for 29 years, serving as CARF’s executive director for the past 16 years.

“It’s been challenging at times, but it’s been very rewarding,” said Korby.

After working at Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields, Korby began working with the fairs in 1987, helping to launch simulcasting operations for the fairs. California’s simulcast network that now includes 25 facilities around the state.

Trainer Ramon Preciado has yet another clenbuterol positive at Parx Racing. The positive, from Flattering Tales – winner of a $10,000 maiden-claiming race Nov. 8 – is the sixth for Preciado during 2015 and comes less than a week after the stewards issued a ruling for Preciado’s fifth positive.
