High winds cause Aqueduct to cancel Sunday card

Sunday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct was canceled due to safety concerns regarding high winds.

The announcement came approximately 25 minutes prior to first post.

Winds were forecasted at 26 miles per hour with gusts between 40-to-45 miles-per-hour throughout the afternoon. The National Weather Service had issued a high-wind advisory until 2 p.m. Management had pushed back first post from 1:20 to 1:35 p.m. and then was planning to speed up post times throughout the card.

Parx horsemen interested in taking over management of racetrack

Officials of Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc., which owns the Parx casino and Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa., have not publicly confirmed they want to lease out or turn over the horse racing end of their operation to an outside management group. But if they do, at least one party, and maybe two, appear interested in discussing such an arrangement.

On Sunday, Sal DeBunda, the president of the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, said his organization expected to meet with Greenwood in the near future to talk about taking over the management of Parx Racing.

Quarantine in place at Parx after horse tests positive for equineherpesvirus

A horse at Parx Racing who became ill this week has been determined to have the equineherpesvirus, resulting in two barns at the Pennsylvania track being quarantined. As a result, no horses stabled at Parx will be allowed to ship off the grounds until the quarantine is lifted.

Top Parx trainer Preciado suspended 90 days for clenbuterol violation

Trainer Ramon Preciado has been suspended 90 days and fined $2,500 for a clenbuterol positive at Parx Racing on Oct. 24. Seventeenohsix, who finished second in the first race that day, has been disqualified from the purse money of the $5,000 claiming race.

Preciado’s suspension is scheduled to begin April 7 and run through July 5. Preciado did not return messages left for him Friday.

Part of Los Alamitos property to be developed into retail space, senior housing

Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred said Tuesday that plans are under way to develop property adjacent to the racetrack for retail and senior housing, but that a long-term commitment to live racing remains in place at the Orange County, Calif., racetrack.

Allred said in a phone interview that as much as 70 acres can be developed without disrupting racing. He said property values make operating a racetrack in Southern California economically unfeasible, but that he plans to do so for the sake of the game.

Former Jockey Club registrar Bishop dies at 80

Edward A. “Buddy” Bishop, the registrar for The Jockey Club from 1984 to 2003, died Wednesday morning of congestive heart failure at a hospital in Lexington, Ky., according to The Jockey Club. Bishop was 80.

Wagner appointed as chair of Association of Racing Commissioners International

Judy Wagner, winner of the 2001 National Handicapping Championship and a member of the Louisiana Racing Commission, has been appointed as chair of the Association of Racing Commissioners International for a two-year term.

Wagner, who also is a member of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s board of directors, will succeed Mark Lamberth as chair of the RCI and serve as chair through 2017. The RCI is an umbrella group for state racing commissions that recommends rules and regulations to its member jurisdictions.
