One group no longer interested in representing Arlington horsemen

The head of an owners and breeders organization that had conducted negotiations to represent horsemen at Arlington International Racecourse said on Thursday that the group is no longer interested in negotiating with the Chicago-area track.

Stockton fair meet to be conducted at Pleasanton

The California Horse Racing Board voted on Thursday to allow the San Joaquin County Fair in Stockton to shift its two-week autumn race meeting to the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton for one year. The vote followed a contentious 90-minute discussion which included opposition from horsemen’s groups and Golden Gate Fields.

Parx makes plans to implement safeguards against equine herpesvirus

On Thursday at Parx Racing, an isolation area was being constructed to house any horses diagnosed with the equine herpesvirus. Also, after the current quarantine ends, new health requirements will be put into effect for horses at Parx, according to Sam Elliott, the track's director of racing.

Six horses at Parx have been diagnosed with the herpesvirus since April 1. Parx also was quarantined for much of last October after a horse shipped to the track and then became ill with the virus.

Betfair launching first U.S. exchange-wagering site May 10

NEW YORK – The launch date for the first exchange-wagering site in the U.S. has been set for May 10, according to the site’s operator, Betfair, but wagering on the site will be restricted in the U.S. to New Jersey residents who are physically in the state when they make their bets, limiting the site’s reach.

Golden Gate raises late pick four guarantee to $100,000

After easily surpassing the guaranteed mark of $75,000 for its late pick four last weekend, Golden Gate Fields has raised the guaranteed pool on the wager to $100,000 for the next two weekends.

Handle on the late pick four last weekend was $105,012 on Saturday and $147,511 on Sunday.

The carryover on the Golden Pick 6 when racing resumes Thursday is $331,365.33 after more than $300,000 was wagered on it last weekend. The entire pool is paid out when there is only one ticket with all six winners.

Breeders' Cup offers 77 Win and You're in races

Seventy-seven stakes races, including 49 held at U.S. racetracks, will offer automatic berths to Breeders’ Cup races this year through the BC Challenge series, which also awards winners with their entry fees and a travel allowance.

The slate of Win and You’re In races, announced Tuesday by Breeders' Cup, includes seven stakes races offering automatic berths to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, the headliner of the Breeders’ Cup two-day, 13-race event, scheduled for Nov. 4-5 at Santa Anita Park near Los Angeles.

Illinois horsemen file suit against Arlington

The Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association filed a lawsuit on Monday seeking to keep Arlington International from using an agreement with a different horsemen’s organization as the legal foundation to offer live racing and simulcasting during the track’s meet this year.

Preciado loses dozens of horses to trainers Gargan, Zulueta

On Monday at Parx Racing, several of embattled trainer Ramon Preciado's owners transferred horses out of his care to Danny Gargan and Marcos Zulueta.

Gargan, who is based at Belmont Park, will be opening a second stable at Parx. On Monday, owners Barbara and Bill Hopkins and Silver Trail Stables were among the owners who transferred 32 horses to Gargan. The horses joining his stable include Trouble Kid, Amelia's Wild Ride, and Roxbury N Overton.

Another 12 of Preciado's horses were turned over to Zulueta.

Allred expresses concerns about long-term future of Los Alamitos

CYPRESS, Calif. – Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred sent a letter to track employees and horsemen on Friday reiterating his commitment to continue racing at the Orange County track but expressing reservations about the long-term prospects for the racecourse beyond his lifetime.
