Preciado's attorney files lawsuit seeking restraining order

Attorney Alan Pincus has filed a federal lawsuit in the Middle District Court of Pennsylvania seeking a temporary restraining order that will allow trainer Ramon Preciado to resume entering horses at Parx Racing.

Preciado has been suspended a total of 270 days by the Pennsylvania Racing Commission for two clenbuterol positives at Parx last fall. The clenbuterol overages were the third and fourth Preciado had at Parx in 2015. He also had two clenbuterol positives at Delaware Park last summer.

Seventh horse tests positive for herpes at Parx

A seventh horse at Parx Racing tested positive for the equine herpesvirus on Monday and was scheduled to be moved to the track's isolation area Tuesday morning.

There are currently two horses on the stable grounds who have tested positive for the herpesrvirus. Both are trained by Ron Dandy, who is stabled in Barn 30 along with trainer Michael Aro. The sixth horse, who tested positive last Thursday, is still at the track and also will be sent to the isolation area.

The isolation area was constructed at Parx over the weekend. It is a large tent that houses temporary stalls.

Kentucky Downs purses top $1.5 million a day

Kentucky Downs, the all-turf racetrack in Franklin, Ky., will distribute $1.56 million a day in purses during its five-day meet this year, far surpassing any other racetrack’s average purse distribution, the track announced on Tuesday.

Total purse distribution this year will be $7.8 million, up from $7.15 million last year, according to the track. Kentucky Downs generates funds for purses year round from hundreds of gambling terminals located at the track that closely resemble slot machines, as well as from simulcasting operations.

N.Y. gaming commission adopts rules to make multirace wagers more uniform

The New York State Gaming Commission on Monday formally adopted new rules governing three popular multirace wagers with the idea of making them uniform.

Regarding the pick six, if two or three legs of the wager are taken off the turf after wagering has concluded, 75 percent of the pool would be paid out to those having four or three winners, respectively. Currently, only 25 percent of the pool is paid out under those circumstances, and the rest is carried over to the next card.

Churchill Downs to host 2018 Breeders' Cup

Churchill Downs last hosted the Breeders' Cup in 2011.

Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., has been selected to host the 2018 Breeders’ Cup, officials for both companies announced Monday, a decision that will return the two-day event to the site that has generated the Breeders’ Cup’s highest attendance and handle figures.

Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, has hosted the Breeders’ Cup eight times in the past, as many times as Santa Anita Park in Southern California. The 2018 event has been scheduled for Nov. 2-3. The last time Churchill hosted the Breeders’ Cup was in 2011, the second of back-to-back events there.

California racing could reap $60 million annually if Internet poker legalized

CYPRESS, Calif. - California horse racing could gain $60 million annually through legislation that would permit Internet poker and compensate racing for the loss of exclusive online gambling.

Currently, horse racing is the only form of legal online gambling in California, which would change with the development of legalized Internet poker. The $60 million would be divided primarily between racetracks and horsemen, in the form of purses.

Mahoning Valley posts substantial gains in average handle for winter-spring meet

Mahoning Valley Race Course wrapped up its winter-spring meet Saturday with substantial gains in average daily handle.

According to figures released by the Austintown, Ohio, track, handle averaged $738,405 per day an increase of more than 31 percent from the corresponding season in 2015 and the highest daily average for any meet since the track opened in late fall of 2014.

Field Size was up significantly as well, with an average of 8.5 wagering interests per race. Last year’s winter-spring season averaged 6.71 wagering interests.

Arlington, horsemen pledge to continue negotiations

A federal judge on Thursday denied a request by the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association for a temporary restraining order that would prohibit a rival horsemen’s organization from negotiating with Arlington International Racecourse on a purse contract, noting that the rival group had said that it had no intention of maintaining discussions with the track.

Barr, Tonko to update supporters of federal bill

The co-sponsors of a federal bill that would appoint a private company to oversee racing’s medication policies have scheduled a hearing for next Thursday in Washington to discuss the bill with its supporters, according to an announcement from the legislators.

The hearing has been called by U.S. Reps. Andy Barr, a Republican from Kentucky, and Paul Tonko, a Democrat from New York, who introduced the bill last year. Barr and Tonko are co-chairmen of the Congressional Horse Caucus, which meets occasionally to discuss issues central to equine interests.
