Top prospect Dynamite Charge sustains fatal injuries in workout

DEL MAR, Calif. -- The highly regarded 2-year-old filly Dynamite Charge had to be euthanized Sunday morning after she sustained a catastrophic injury at the conclusion of a workout at Del Mar.

Dynamite Charge had just completed her workout when she was pulled up shortly after the wire, favoring her left hind leg. Trainer Doug O'Neill said she had fractures of the sesamoids and condyle in that joint and that the severity of the injury necessitated her being euthanized.

Attendance, handle rise on Del Mar's opening day

DEL MAR, Calif. – Attendance and all-sources handle showed increases on Friday’s opening day of the Del Mar summer meeting compared to opening day on a Thursday in 2015.

Friday’s program drew 42,562 spectators, the 10th-largest crowd in track history, the track announced. Attendance rose 5.6 percent from 40,304 in 2015. The 2014 opening day, also on a Thursday, drew a crowd of 42,021. The record attendance of 47,339 was set on opening day in 2012, a Wednesday.

NYRA hires new chief financial officer

ELMONT, N.Y. – Gordon Lavalette has been hired as the new chief financial officer for the New York Racing Association, replacing Susan Stover, who left the company in January for a similar job at the Johnny Rockets restaurant chain.

Lavalette spent the last 28 months as the CFO for ION Media Networks (formerly Paxson Communications Corp.), an American broadcasting company that owns and operates more than 60 television stations. Prior to that, Lavalette worked in finance for the New Jersey Devils for nine years and before that for the New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets).

California statewide handle declines almost 9 percent in June

DEL MAR, Calif. - All-sources handle at California racetracks declined 8.8 percent in June and was down 4.6 percent for the year, according to figures released at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting by executive director Rick Baedeker.

Combined handle at Golden Gate Fields, Los Alamitos, the Northern California fair circuit, and Santa Anita reached $220,983,777 in June, compared to $242,385,842 in June 2015. Handle at Santa Anita was affected negatively by the absence of turf racing for the final five racing days of the month.

Mike Rogers, the president of The Stronach Group, has been elected to the Breeders’ Cup’s 14-seat board of directors, Breeders' Cup announced on Wednesday after tallying the results of voting for three open seats. Two current board members were re-elected, Breeders’ Cup said.

Louisiana Downs: Travis Stone will host handicapping seminar

Travis Stone, the Churchill Downs announcer who formerly called races at Louisiana Downs, is scheduled to conduct a handicapping seminar at the Bossier City, La., track Saturday as part of activities surrounding an all-turf card. Stone also is slated to call a few races at the track, said Louisiana Downs official Trent McIntosh.

Former jockeys Clifton De Tiege, Bo White die in Texas

Clifton De Tiege, who reached the top of his riding profession in 1962 when he won the All American Futurity aboard Hustling Man, and James “Bo” White, a perennial leading jockey at the now-shuttered Trinity Meadows near Fort Worth, both died recently in Texas.

De Tiege died July 3 in San Antonio and was 75, according to Heritage Funeral Home. De Tiege turned to training after he retired from the saddle and had his last starter in February at Sam Houston. His survivors include a son, trainer Clifford De Tiege.

Evangeline lowers takeout on pick four to 12 percent

Evangeline Downs will lower the takeout on its pick-four wagers from 25 percent to 12 percent starting next Wednesday, the track announced. Evangeline received Louisiana Racing Commission approval for the move Monday.

It will be one of the lowest pick-four takeout rates in the country. Sam Houston offered a 12 percent takeout on the bet earlier this year, while Canterbury’s pick-four takeout rate is 14 percent.

Overnight purses slashed up to 20 percent

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Lower-than-expected handle at this meet has forced Arlington to cut purses starting next Thursday, the beginning of the next condition book.

Purses for the highest-paying races, allowances and straight maidens, will be trimmed by 20 percent; bottom-level purses will be cut by 10 percent. An open maiden race will be worth just $25,600, and $7,500 maiden claimers will run for $8,800.

Finger Lakes jockey Michael Davila nears milestone

Jockey Michael Davila Jr. is nearing his 1,000th career victory. Through Tuesday, he had won 995 races.

Davila began riding in 1997 and has been a mainstay at Finger Lakes for much of his career. He has won 941 races at the upstate New York track and was tied for fourth in the standings coming into Wednesday’s races.
