Nyquist sharpens for Haskell by drilling a mile

Del Mar, Calif. -- Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist on Sunday worked a mile at Del Mar in 1:39.40 in his final work before next Sunday's Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth, which will be his first start since he suffered his first career loss when third in the Preakness Stakes two months ago.

Nyquist worked shortly after 1 pm, about an hour before the first race. He worked in company with the 2-year-old Sorry Erik, who provided a target for five furlongs before Nyquist powered past him.

Mario Gutierrez, Nyquist's regular jockey, was aboard for the work.

South Jersey man pays $20,000 for California Chrome's silks, saddle towel in charity auction

DEL MAR, Calif. - Mark Stanton came to California for a weekend of beach time and bets at Del Mar. He went home to South Jersey with a memento that fit comfortably in his carry-on luggage.

Saturday evening, Stanton paid $20,000 for the silks and saddle towel worn by California Chrome a few hours earlier en route to a win in the San Diego Handicap. The silks and saddle towel were auctioned before the start of the Del Mar Paddock Sale of horses of racing age for charity.

Parx cancels Monday card; adds Hall of Fame Stakes to schedule

Parx Racing has canceled its Monday card in anticipation of hot weather that could prove dangerous for horses and riders as the Northeast heat wave continues.

According to Sam Elliott, the track's director of racing, the Monday forecast calls for a temperature of about 95 and a heat index of 104 in early afternoon, with the heat index crawling up to 106 later in the day.

Mountaineer rider Lagunes wins 1,000th career race

Gabriel Lagunes won the 1,000th race of his career Saturday night in the fifth race at Mountaineer.

Lagunes has been riding in the United States since 2006. His milestone win was his 218th at Mountaineer. He currently is third in the Mountaineer standings to Deshawn Parker. He finished second to Parker in the 2015 standings.

Lagunes scored 374 of his wins at the now shuttered Beulah Park between 2009 and 2014. He also has a total of 207 victories at Belterra Park, the former River Downs.

Racing commission will use West Virginia Derby nominees to debut new drug-testing program

The West Virginia Racing Commission will begin pulling samples this week from horses pointing to the Aug. 6 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Park as the first step in the state’s launch of an out-of-competition testing program, according to the commission’s executive director.

Hall of Fame trainer Leatherbury suspended for medication violation

King Leatherbury, 82, will be the third-oldest living trainer inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Trainer King Leatherbury has been suspended 15 days and fined $500 by the Laurel Park board of stewards for a medication violation. Leatherbury's suspension began July 11 and continues through Monday.

Classic Wildcat, trained by Leatherbury, won the third race at Laurel Park on April 22. Classic Wildcat tested positive for Mepivacaine after winning the $7,000 claiming race by one length.

Mepivacaine is a strong local anesthetic. It can block pain and is used around surgical sites and sometimes in lameness examinations.

VLT revenue cap hot topic for NYRA

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Though locally based politicians would prefer Gov. Andrew Cuomo leave the current franchise agreement in place with the New York Racing Association as part of any reprivatization bill, there is reason to believe that a future deal could include some sort of cap on the revenue NYRA receives from the video-lottery terminals in place at Aqueduct.

Filly claimed by Vitali in Kentucky not permitted to run at Gulfstream

Garden Goddess was scratched as the 8-5 morning-line favorite from a Thursday race at Gulfstream Park after officials determined that the filly was ineligible to race because of a premature transfer of ownership.

The scratch drew attention once again to an ongoing situation with trainer Marcus Vitali and the status of his sizable stable. Vitali recently transferred the care of many of his horses from Maryland, where they had been racing until late June, to Florida-based trainer Allan Hunter Jr.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – There won’t be a Triple Crown winner galloping across these hallowed grounds this summer, but there will be plenty of stargazing to do nonetheless at Saratoga.

The champions Songbird and Tepin, male turf star Flintshire, Triple Crown race winners Exaggerator and Creator, and jaw-dropping Metropolitan Handicap winner Frosted are among the equine celebrities expected to appear this summer, making for at least one must-see event almost every weekend.

Hayward starts racing consulting company

Charles Hayward, a former top executive of the New York Racing Association and Daily Racing Form, has launched a racing consulting company called Hayward Advisory Services, according to an announcement from the company.

The consulting company will “assist racing companies grow their business through a strategic planning process and by introducing revenue and cost-saving initiatives,” the announcement said. The announcement said that Hayward Advisory Services would be marketed to companies in racing “and other industries.”
