Two federal legislators who are members of the Congressional Horse Congress have signed a letter urging the Treasury Department to approve changes to tax rules that would benefit horseplayers, according to a racing organization that is lobbying for the changes.

New Massachusetts track would yield $100M annually

A new $150 million equestrian center and racetrack proposed by Massachusetts horsemen would generate $99 million in annual economic impact and create 950 jobs in the state, a study paid for by the horsemen contends.

The study, conducted by staff at the Center for Economic Development at the University of Amherst, was commissioned this year by the New England Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, which is seeking legislative support for the proposed equestrian center. The study was released late last week and provided by the New England HBPA.

Track reports increase in attendance, decline in betting

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita concluded nearly six months of racing on Sunday with a 3 percent increase in attendance and a 5 percent decline in all-sources handle compared to a similar period last year, according to a statement from the track.

Parx rider Frankie Pennington wins 2,000th race

Jockey Frankie Pennington rode the 2,000th winner of his career on Sunday the sixth race at Parx Racing.

Pennington scored his milestone win aboard Now We Are Free for trainer Kelly Breen.

Pennington, 29, has been based at Parx since 2004 and has led the rider standings there the past two years and in 2006 when the track was still named Philadelphia Park. Pennington led the Parx standings by 19 wins coming into the Sunday card.

New Mexico sets dates for 2017 season

The New Mexico Racing Commission has awarded race dates for next season, with all of the meets in the state to again feature races for both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

Sunland Park was awarded a 72-date meet that starts Dec. 16 and extends to April 18.

SunRay Park was granted a 36-date meet for next year from April 21 to June 19.

Ruidoso Downs is scheduled to race 60 dates in 2017, from May 26 to Sept. 4.

Eddie Martin released from hospital after bad spill at Canterbury Park

Eddie Martin was seriously injured in a July 4 spill at Canterbury Park, but it could have been a lot worse.

Martin fractured two vertebrae, his clavicle, his toe, and another bone in his foot, but his spinal cord wasn’t damaged, nor did Martin experience any sort of paralysis. He was released from the hospital Thursday and will be out of action at least 90 days, according to his agent, Chuck Costanzo.

Martin, 53, has been riding since 1980 and has won 3,853 races.

Songbird's appearance would push Coaching Club American Oaks purse to $500,000

Songbird will make her next start in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga.

The New York Racing Association will raise the purse of the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks from $300,000 to $500,000, contingent on undefeated Eclipse Award winner Songbird starting in the July 24 race at Saratoga, track officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

Handle dips at Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet

The just-concluded Oak Tree at Pleasanton 12-day race meeting showed a decrease in handle compared with 2015.

Ontrack handle for the local races dipped 5 percent from $4,847,743 in 2015 to $4,597,908 this year. All-sources handle, including ontrack, satellite, out-of-state, and advance-deposit wagering, fell 12 percent from $15,427,193 last year to $13,575,843 this year.

Handle rises 3 percent at Golden Gate Fields

Buoyed by a big increase in wagering from out of state, Golden Gate Fields showed a mild increase in its all-sources live handle for its 97-day winter-spring meet that concluded June 12.

Despite running one fewer day than at the 2014-15 meet, Golden Gate’s all-sources live handle was $168,187,963, a 3 percent increase over the $167,748,063 total for the 2014-15 meet. Average daily handle was up 3.8 percent at $1,733,896 from the previous year’s daily average of $1,670,898.

The Golden Pick 6 pool that reached $4,594,997 on the final day drove the increase.
