TOBA names finalists for owner of year

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association has named eFive Racing, Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms, Rockingham Ranch, and the partnership of Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm as the finalists for the TOBA National Owner of the Year.

The award, along with National Small Breeder of the Year and state breeder awards, will be presented at TOBA's annual awards dinner, Sept. 8 at the Woodford Reserve Club at Kroger Field in Lexington, Ky.

The state breeder of the year honorees are:

Arkansas: Bill McDowell

California: Richard Barton

Breeders' Cup to give future wagering another try

Breeders’ Cup plans to offer parimutuel future wagering on several of the races Nov. 2-3 at Churchill Downs, according to multiple racing officials with knowledge of the plans.

Future bets could be offered as early as this weekend on both the Classic and Distaff, according to the officials and multiple internal documents obtained by Daily Racing Form. The Classic and Distaff future wagers would each offer wagering on 15 individual horses and a single field entry, according to the documents, and they would open at noon Friday and close at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.

Del Mar handle up more than 8 percent for meeting

DEL MAR, Calif. – Boosted by increases in account and out-of-state wagering as well as strong business on Saturday’s Pacific Classic card, Del Mar’s summer meeting showed an 8.2 percent increase in all-sources average handle through Sunday, the 25th day of the 36-day season, compared to the same point last summer.

The all-sources handle on Saturday’s Pacific Classic program was $25,969,128, a Del Mar record for a non-Breeders’ Cup day. The previous mark for a non-Breeders’ Cup Day was $25.1 million set on Pacific Classic Day in 2016.

Next three Breeders' Cups go to Santa Anita, Keeneland, and Del Mar

The Breeders' Cup will return to Del Mar in 2021 after a successful event there in 2017.

The two-day Breeders’ Cup event will return to Santa Anita Park near Los Angeles in 2019 and will then be held at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky., and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club near San Diego in the succeeding two years, the organization announced on Friday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Jockey Club intended to telegraph its intentions to bolster racing in distressed markets with last Sunday’s Round Table announcement that it would consider buying racetracks in the future but has no immediate plans to acquire any racing assets, the chief operating officer of the organization said in a follow-up interview this week.

Dave Johnson files suit against video game company

Dave Johnson, the former television announcer for the Triple Crown and numerous racetracks, has filed a lawsuit against the maker of a mobile horseracing game for unauthorized use of his likeness.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday in New York County Supreme Court by Johnson’s attorney Drew Mollica, alleges that Tilting Point has been using a character based on Johnson to narrate races in the game Horse Racing Manager 2018. Screenshots from the game show an announcer who looks nearly identical to Johnson.

Genuine Reward, one of two foals out of Genuine Risk, dies at 25

Genuine Reward, one of only two offspring of 1980 Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk, was euthanized on Wednesday afternoon at Old Friends Farm near Georgetown, Ky., according to Michael Blowen, the founder of the farm. Genuine Reward, whose health declined precipitously over the past two weeks, according to Blowen, was 25.

Sports betting grows in New Jersey, but Monmouth's share declines
