Churchill Downs and Keeneland have filed an application with state regulators to conduct a brief Standardbred meet next year at the site of a casino that Churchill is opening soon in Louisville, Ky., the two companies announced on Wednesday.

Daily all-sources wagering handle at the Ellis Park summer meet, which began July 1 and ended Monday, was up marginally from last year, but total wagering was down, partly because of fewer races, according to figures released Wednesday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Gross wagering on the 29 full and partial cards conducted at the meet at Ellis in western Kentucky was $39,073,368, down 4.4 percent from 2017, when 31 full and partial cards were run. Average per-day handle was $1,347,375, up 2.3 percent over last year. Imported simulcasting figures are not included.

DEL MAR, Calif. – One person was shot by a San Diego County Sheriff’s department officer just as the final race was being completed on Sunday night at Del Mar around 6:40 p.m. Pacific time.

In a press release put out by the San Diego County Sheriff’s department at 9:30 p.m., it said “a man came to the ticket window” at the track and “wanted a ticket to this evening’s concert,” which was following the races with Ice Cube.

Churchill Downs Inc. has asked Florida gambling regulators to determine how many jai alai performances it would need to conduct in order to retain its licenses to operate slot machines at its Calder Race Course and Casino in Miami, according to a document provided by the Florida Department of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – John Asher, whose love for horse racing and the Kentucky Derby steered him away from a highly successful career in radio and made him the lead spokesman for Churchill Downs as vice president of communications, died of an apparent heart attack Monday morning while on a family vacation in Orlando, Fla. He was 62.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association didn’t need a Triple Crown winner to have record business on Travers Day.

Despite the fact Triple Crown winner Justify was already enjoying retirement, all-sources handle on Saturday’s 13-race card was $52,086,597, eclipsing the previous Travers Day record of $49,668,754, set in 2015 when Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was upset by Keen Ice. After a meet punctuated by rainy weather, Saturday’s 13-race card was run under pristine weather conditions with the main track fast and both turf courses firm.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Santa Anita is proceeding with plans to build 800 stalls on a parking lot adjacent to the racetrack, officials told the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday.

Track executive Scott Daruty told the racing board that Santa Anita is seeking full approval from the city of Arcadia in coming weeks and would like to begin construction this winter on a yearlong project. Santa Anita is seeking to house 800 horses currently based at Los Alamitos.

The new barns would increase stabling capacity at Santa Anita to approximately 2,600.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The Southern California Thoroughbred schedule will be largely unchanged in 2019, but the Northern California schedule, particularly July and August, remains unresolved, according to discussions during an hour-long meeting of the California Horse Racing Board’s dates committee on Wednesday.

The full racing board is scheduled to discuss 2019 dates at its monthly meeting at Del Mar on Thursday.
