Equine researcher Stanley joining University of Kentucky

Dr. Scott Stanley, who heads California’s equine drug-testing laboratory at the University of California-Davis, has accepted a position at the University of Kentucky in Lexington as the professor of analytical chemistry at the Maxwell G. Gluck Equine Research Center, according to the universities.

Parx and Laurel enjoy big days at windows

Parx Racing and Laurel Park both had brisk business at the betting windows last Saturday.

The Parx card, which included the Pennsylvania Derby and Cotillion, had all sources handle of $8.96 million, a 12 percent increase over the $8 million bet in 2017.

The record Pennsylvania Derby Day handle is the $10.39 million bet in 2014 when Bayern won the Pa. Derby and California Chrome finished sixth. Untapable won that year’s Cotillion.

In 2016, Pennsylvania Derby Day handled $9.61 million. Connect beat Gun Runner that year and Songbird won the Cotillion.

Illinois Racing Board approves 2019 dates

CHICAGO – The Illinois Racing Board rubber-stamped a 2019 racing schedule previously agreed upon by the state’s three remaining regular racing venues during the board’s annual dates-awards meeting Tuesday in Chicago.

By a vote of 9-0, the board approved a schedule very similar to the 2018 racing calendar, with the main change being the absence of a winter harness meeting at Hawthorne, which conducts Standardbred racing under the banner of Suburban Downs.

Doro named director of racing at Oaklawn Park

Jerome “Jed” Doro has been named director of racing for Oaklawn Park, the Hot Springs, Ark., track announced Thursday. Doro, who for the past 10 years has been a racing official at Delaware Park, will begin his new duties Sept. 24.

Doro takes over from David Longinotti, the longtime director of racing for Oaklawn who earlier this year was named director of Oaklawn Anywhere, the track’s account-wagering platform. Pat Pope remains the racing secretary at Oaklawn.
