This $260,000 daughter of Congrats rallied into contention inside on the turn, angled out, and dug in gamely to win a stretch battle for second before galloping out with good energy in her debut over a sloppy track.

Trip Notes for Jan. 3-5: Old Hat, Dania Beach, Jerome, Santa Ynez, and more...

Saturday, January 3

Gulfstream - Old Hat (race 4)

COMMENT: Ekati’s Phaeton made it 3 wins in as many tries on this main track, again using her speed to get a good trip that carried her to victory. Coming off a nice second in a stakes at Gulfstream Park West on Nov.

Illman: How I'd play Gulfstream for Sunday, Jan. 4

Sunday’s card at Gulfstream looks very challenging. I will take a few small swings, but will also keep a keen eye on the 3-year-old maiden special weight events, competitive  heats featuring promising horses that might do well, if not today, then in the near future.

Free: How I'd play Santa Anita on Sunday, Jan. 4

ARCADIA, Calif. – Action will be limited Sunday at Santa Anita. If there are overlays in the early races, they are tough to find. But there is an apparent low-odds standout in race 3, a first-level allowance for 3-year-old fillies at one mile, and at least one longshot later in the card.

Race 3 favorite ALL STAR BUB (6) was purchased privately since her big maiden win in October. She will make her first start Sunday since being transferred to Jerry Hollendorfer. The front-runner looks like the controlling speed and a favorite I will not try to beat.

Illman: Gulfstream pick four for Saturday, Jan. 3

Gulfstream Park hosts a nice card Saturday. I’ll take a look at the 50-cent late pick four comprised of three stakes races and a difficult conditioned claimer.

My “caveman” video analysis of the bet is available at the following link:

Hammersly: Gulfstream pick three for Sunday, Jan. 4

Incorporating a race full of firsters in your pick three play is risky business, but it helps considerably when such a race is the first leg. It gives you a chance to see wagering action and make a physical assessment, so a pick three involving races 8-10 seems quite playable here. (This play is only if these three races stay on the turf.)

Bernier: How I'd play Santa Anita on Saturday, Jan. 3

The first two races Saturday at Santa Anita feature maidens – one group of claimers, another of special weight. I’ll look to play an early double and hopefully pad the bankroll for the rest of the day.

Free: Pick three play for Santa Anita on Saturday, Jan. 3

ARCADIA, Calif. – A pick three that “singles” a hot first-time starter is the exotic-wager recommendation Saturday at Santa Anita. The pick three is on races 2-4.

Race 2 is maiden sprint at 5 1/2furlongs. First-timer THE MAN (7) will be tough to beat. Trained by Bob Baffert (0 for 16 into Friday), the colt’s works include an impressive gate move Dec. 22. He went in 58.60 seconds under a hold. It was a “wow” work. Yes, he has speed.

Hammersly: How I'd play Gulfstream on Saturday, Jan. 3

A trio of runners could prove pivotal for your in-race and multi-race wagers.

Race 5

MORE FRONT is bred to love turf, being by top turf sire War Front. He also cost $400,000 at auction, so there surely are some expectations here. His debut on turf Nov. 8 at Gulfstream Park West, was encouraging as despite a slow start, he made a threatening move into the lane before flattening out a bit to finish fourth. He can benefit from that experience, and trainer Christophe Clement is superb second time out (24 percent).
