King: X Y Jet can topple Daredevil in Swale

Kenny Martin/Coglianese Photos
X Y Jet (right), finishing second to Barbados in the Hutcheson, is a good viable alternative to favored Daredevil in Saturday's Swale.

More often than not, when a horse owns the top last-race Beyer Speed Figure, the horse is favored. And if by chance that figure came against top company recently and over the track where the horse is running again, a short price also is likely.

Yet there is a horse in Saturday’s Swale Stakes at Gulfstream who holds those advantages but is unlikely to be the public’s choice. He is X Y Jet, and he is worth a bet.

Jerardi: Daredevil won’t have it easy in Swale

My good friend Jeff Siegel told me the other day that since the advent of synthetic surfaces, jockeys have ridden like every race is a grass race, even races on conventional dirt. You do not see nearly as many races where horses are sent hard from the start and the fractions are eye-catching. That lack of pace obviously affects final times and Beyer Speed Figures.

Weekend Warrior for Feb. 28: Picks for Battaglia, Texas Heritage, Santa Ysabel

Royal Son could improve dramatically with a switch to Polytrack and the addition of blinkers in the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park.

Falling between last Saturday’s Fountain of Youth, Risen Star, and the seasonal bow of Main Sequence and next Saturday’s Big Cap, San Felipe, Tampa Bay Derby, and Gotham, this Saturday represents a relative soft spot on the national stakes schedule. The day’s main event is the Grade 2, $200,000 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream, which marks the seasonal debut of Champagne Stakes winner Daredevil.

Bet This, Not That: Trainers, dirt routes, and the Kentucky Derby

With less than 10 weeks remaining until the first Saturday in May, much of the focus in the racing world has turned to the 3-year-olds. There are 14 races remaining for these horses to earn points in their bid to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, and with over 400 horses nominated for the Triple Crown, the competition for these points will be fierce.
