Free's horses to watch at Santa Anita for week of March 2

ELEKTRUM
Trainer: John Sadler
Last race: Feb. 26, 3rd
Finish: 2nd by 1/2
Beyer: 85
This N2X turf filly was compromised by pace and traffic, her second bad trip since arriving in the U.S. She steadied early, was blocked in the stretch, and finished fast, but the winner had the jump. She is due for luck and is the likely favorite again at the same level.

Litfin's Aqueduct horses to watch for week of March 2

MATTERHORN
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Last race: Feb. 28, 5th
Finish: 6th by 4 3/4
Beyer: 77
Making his first start since last summer, this $625,000 Tapit colt returned in a six-furlong allowance, trailed a slow pace to the stretch, and galloped out strongly past the wire as if merely getting the kinks out for an upcoming stretch-out.

Mike Smith brings Far Right up the rail to win his second straight stakes in the Southwest.

Far Right continues his reign as the leader of the 3-year-old division at Oaklawn Park, where the next Arkansas Derby prep on the calendar is the Grade 2, $750,000 Rebel on March 14. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas made news last week when he told Daily Racing Form that Take Charge Brandi, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2014, is being considered for the Rebel. If she were to run, the race would match last year’s 2-year-old champs, as American Pharoah is being pointed for the Rebel. Lukas said Take Charge Brandi is also a candidate to remain in her division for the Grade 3, $150,000 Honeybee.

Dortmund is being pointed to the Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

The role of favorite for the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes became crystal clear with confirmation from owner Kaleem Shah that DORTMUND will run in the 1 1/16-mile race this Saturday, rather than wait for the Santa Anita Derby on April 4.

Dortmund is 4 for 4, including a thrilling victory in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis on Feb. 7. Trainer Bob Baffert originally indicated he would skip the San Felipe and wait for the Santa Anita Derby. Those plans changed. Dortmund is certain to start favored in a good San Felipe lineup.
