El Kabeir wins the Gotham Stakes on March 7 at Aqueduct.

EL KABEIR showed a new dimension, rallying from 12 lengths back to win Saturday’s Grade 3 Gotham, his third graded stakes victory from his last four starts. Though his final time wasn’t fast and he defeated a modest group, the horse should be given credit for his consistency and versatility.

TIZ SHEA D also should be credited for going from a 5 1/2-furlong maiden win at Parx to a runner-up finish in the Gotham. The horse will be a late Triple Crown nominee ($6,000 fee paid by March 23), according to part-owner Adam Wachtel.

This 3-year-old filly produced a smashing career debut in a turf route for California-bred fillies and mares. She walked out of the gate, got stopped in traffic on the far turn, lost ground into the lane, and then drew away. This was a super debut by a Tribal Rule filly.

War Story is pointing to the Louisiana Derby on March 28 at Fair Grounds.

No changes on the top Fair Grounds-based 3-year-olds from last week, since all has been quiet since the Louisiana Derby Preview card of Feb. 21. War Story, the Risen Star second, was the first horse on these lists who raced Feb. 21 to work back, going an easy half-mile on March 1. International Star is based in Florida, so he’s off this list, so War Story sits atop it. Yockey’s Warrior came out of his meet-best maiden win Feb. 21 in good shape, but he got started too late to make a Fair Grounds stakes, and can’t be considered a Triple Crown horse at this point.

Aqueduct - Tom Fool (race 4)

COMMENT: Sure, Salutos Amigos basically has had the same victims in three straight wins, but the manner in which he did this said he may not take a backseat to any sprinter in the country right now. Despite missing time with a foot issue and carrying high weight of 125 pounds he dominated this. He broke very alertly but was content to be take back to third as Green Gratto and Dads Caps dueled early. He launched his bid into the lane, surged to the lead inside the eighth pole and drew off to win with ease.

Brad Free's top 3-year-olds at Santa Anita on March 9

Shigeki Kikkawa
The unbeaten Dortmund earned a 104 Beyer Speed Figure for his win in the San Felipe.

DORTMUND remained unbeaten after five starts with a front-running triumph in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, which solidified his role as favorite for the Santa Anita Derby on April 4. PROSPECT PARK ran well to finish second in the San Felipe; he will benefit from the longer distance of the 1 1/8-mile Santa Anita Derby. Those two colts remain on top of the California 3-year-old division.
