It has been six years since the Dubai World Cup was contested over dirt. American trainees won five of the final six runnings of the race over the dirt at Nad Al Sheba. With a dirt surface now installed at Meydan, favoritism in arguably the grandest dirt race in the world will belong to 2014 Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome.
I am reasonably certain that I have never picked a winner on Polytrack or correctly projected a Beyer Speed Figure on that surface. So, no, I did not see a solid grass horse like Dubai Sky, with a pair of 78s, zooming to a 92 and winning the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park. Royal Son got a 97 in the John Battaglia Memorial in his first Polytrack try and his first race with blinkers. He earned that number with the lead. Without the lead, the colt fell back to an 83.

He was cutting back from 1 1/8 miles to a mile and did well to track the pace in a race wired by Grade 3 winner Den’s Legacy. C J’s Awesome is a good-looking son of Awesome Again who established his class last year when fourth in a pair of Grade 2 races at Parx and Indiana Grand.
