BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, April 18th by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore

We are literally ready to leave for the airport to get to the OBSAPR sale, so this will be a bit to the point.  If you had the prescience to throw our Pick last week, All Day Alice, into your superfecta mixes, you may not have liked her distinctly one-paced style to finish fourth but if you had the other three, you nailed a $56,000 payoff.  If only, right?  In any case, there were nine BreezeFigs maidens who won last week, at Aqueduct, Charles Town, Gulfstream, Keeneland (2), Pimlico and Tampa Bary (3).  In addition, four previous

King: Two overachievers worth a look in Kentucky Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Materiality, shown winning the Florida Derby, has so far outperformed his odds by winnint three time as the second choice. He figures to be third or fourth choice in the Kentucky Derby.

As a general rule, handicappers appreciate horses who outrun their odds and view with skepticism those who have lost multiple times as a favorite. The former group is viewed as overachievers; the latter as underachievers.

So, as it applies to this year’s Kentucky Derby, who are the overachievers and underachievers, at least in terms of how the public has bet them?

McGee: How I'd play Keeneland for Saturday, April 18

Race 1

Obviously she has nowhere near the talent as her older full sister, the great Rachel Alexandra, but SAMANTHA NICOLE (No. 6) should have enough to win a maiden race – especially against this small, non-descript group, and with the hometown Stonestreet folks on hand to enjoy it. Her latest, which came at Gulfstream, comes with an obvious excuse, and she could very well be in front every step here. I’ll single her to start the early pick three:

Weekend Warrior for April 18: Picks for Charles Town Classic, Elkhorn, Dahlia

Barbara D. Livingston
If General a Rod moves forward again in his second start for Todd Pletcher, he's capable of upsetting the Charles Town Classic.

Charles Town Races, the six-furlong track in West Virginia, is single-handedly altering the perception of bullrings. Not only does Charles Town offer the richest U.S. race of the entire month in the Grade 2, $1.5 million Charles Town Classic on Saturday, it lured Shared Belief, the best horse in America, if not the world, to run in it.

Other races of note Saturday include the Grade 3, $400,000 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne; the Grade 2, $250,000 Elkhorn at Keeneland; the Grade 2, $200,000 Distaff at Aqueduct; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Santa Barbara at Santa Anita.
