Bet This, Not That: Oaklawn review

Prior to the 2015 meet at Oaklawn Park, we used DRF Formulator to highlight some key trainers and analyze how they’ve fared there over the last five years. Oaklawn’s meet ended April 11, so let’s review how each angle performed. It’s not simply an exercise in self-evaluation but also in looking forward to see which angles could remain positive or negative ones at Oaklawn next year.

Weekend Warrior for April 25: Picks for Last Tycoon, Excelsior, Miami Mile

Barbara D. Livingston
Effinex (left) looks like a solid contender in the Excelsior at Aqueduct, based on his good performance in his first start this season.

The Saturday before the Kentucky Derby is understandably light in terms of stakes action, with four Grade 3 events topping the schedule – the $200,000 Excelsior at Aqueduct, the $100,000 Last Tycoon at Santa Anita, the $100,000 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields, and the $100,000 Miami Mile at Gulfstream. The Miami Mile will have a say in Gulfstream’s Rainbow 6 mandatory payout Saturday, which could include a giant, seven-figure carryover if it lasts until Saturday.

Derby Watch: Many contenders skip working at Churchill

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Kentucky Derby hopeful Carpe Diem trains April 18 at Keeneland.

There was a time when it seemed almost sacrilegious to forgo working at Churchill Downs prior to running in the Kentucky Derby.

But just as the trend with Derby prospects in recent years has been toward fewer starts spaced farther apart, so too has there been an adjustment regarding where trainers choose to work their horses prior to the Derby.

Kentucky Derby Clocker: War Story, Mr. Z work five furlongs

Kentucky Derby hopeful War Story works five furlongs Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After several slow days on the Kentucky Derby workout front, things began to pick up Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs, where both War Story and Mr. Z turned in five-furlong works and American Pharoah really got to stretch his legs for the first time since arriving here last week.

The weather was overcast, with a brief shower thrown in shortly before the renovation break, while the temperature hovered in the low to mid-50s throughout the morning.[bc_playlist_id:289889:]
