I will take a small swing at Saturday’s pick five at Santa Anita – a sequence which features horses that range from $20,000 maiden claimers to Grade 1 runners.
RACE 1
Let’s try a pick three at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Race 3 – Maiden Claiming
I’m going to try and beat the morning-line favorite, Caprock Kid (2). While he has races that are certainly fast enough to win and now drops into a claiming race for the first time, he has never gained ground from the stretch call to the wire. He just doesn’t seem very trustworthy at a short price.
The early double and some early pick threes present a quandary as race 2 is loaded with firsters, so unless you play the pick three beginning with race 2, where you can see the wagering and see the horses on the track, you’re flying a bit blind. That doesn’t mean they’re not playable, but we’ll look after race 2 for options. These runners can be critical for your in-race and multirace wagers.
Trainer Norm McKnight saddles Bold Ambition (#5, ML 7-2) in Friday’s sixth race at Woodbine, a six-furlong maiden special weight race. Since Jan. 1, 2014, McKnight is winning at a 31 percent clip in sprint races, for a return on investment of $2.87.

Integrity (#5, ML 5-2) returns in Friday’s third race at Belmont Park, a one-mile optional claimer. It will be his first start since finishing second by 3 1/2 lengths in an optional claimer March 27 at Aqueduct. The first- and third-place finishers from that race came back to win their next starts.

After Where’s Poppa, half of our hunch-bet Quick-Pix exacta was scratched, we figured we might be OK with the other half, OK Momma, as our key—and then she walked out of the gate and took the tourist trip around Belmont Park without hardly raising a gallop. Meanwhile Katama, our better-liked of the other two BreezeFigs horses, came storming along to catch the other BreezeFigs horse, Groovy A at the wire, paying $25 and kicking off a $145 BreezeFigs

Saturday marks the return of a champion, as Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Work All Week races for the first time since winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in the Grade 3 Aristides at Churchill Downs.
It is a race Work All Week should win. He is the class, is going his best distance of six furlongs, and is running on dirt, a surface on which he is unbeaten in 10 starts.
