Had almost no chance trying to rally into a controlled pace over a strip that favored speed in her debut, but she did well to get the show. She can run down $16,000 maiden claimers in her return.

Disappointing at odds-on, this Union Rags debut filly can improve. Her works were messed up (race postponed four days by weather). She set the pace, tired, and galloped out in front.

Trip Notes for January 28-29: Pegasus World Cup, W.L. McKnight, and more

Bernier: How I'll play Santa Anita for Sunday, Jan. 29

Sunday's feature at Santa Anita is the ninth and final race on the card, the $75,000 Clockers' Corner Stakes going down the hill. I'll focus on the final two races and play a late double, keying a horse in the finale.

RACE 8

Peck: Gulfstream pick five for Saturday, Jan. 28

Saturday's late pick five at Gulfstream ends with the $12 million Pegasus, a race where one would presumably have to take a stand among the two favorites, with prior legs tough to decipher. Here's one way to play it:

Gierkink: How I'll play Gulfstream on Sunday, Jan. 29

I’ll take a stab at the most appealing sequence of races on the program, the late pick four, starting with the ninth.

The favored SWEET ELLA (2) enters this first-level optional claimer off a clear-cut score in a $50,000 starter allowance. The other obvious protagonist in race 9 is MOON OVER PARIS (4), who nearly got the job done two weeks ago as a longshot in another 7 1/2-furlong turf tilt. Paco Lopez rode her for the first time then and retains the mount. He doubled up Friday.

TimeformUS Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017

Race 1:

Are We Not Men (#4)

Rudy Rodriguez gets a 100 TimeformUS Trainer Rating first off the claim.

Was compromised by a poor start and a tiring racetrack last time.

Possesses the tactical speed necessary to stay close to what should be a moderate pace this time.

4-1 on ML.

Race 3:

Bourbon Empire (#4)

Finished well last time despite having to swing wide for the stretch drive.

Free: Santa Anita pick four for Saturday, Jan. 28

ARCADIA, Calif. – The late pick four on races 7-10 Saturday at Santa Anita includes two Cal-bred stakes, an allowance route on dirt, and a maiden race on turf. Here's a look at the sequence, and a $72 ticket (50-cent minimum).

Race 7, California Cup Turf Classic

ASHLEYLUVSSUGAR (1), a multiple graded winner back from a short layoff, enters with one knock – odds. Ashleyluvssugar is 8-5 favorite, at a nine-furlong distance slightly shorter than his specialty. He is a must-use, despite the price.
