BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

In retrospect, our Pix last week were not far off the mark. Red Curls was off the board at Tampa Bay but was beaten only two lengths for the win, and Multiplier got left at Fair Grounds but closed strongly to be nosed out of the exacta. Tab both back. Ten BreezeFigs maidens crossed the wire first during the week: Aqueduct (two, including a BreezeFigs exacta); Delta Downs, Fair Grounds (two), Golden Gate, Laurel, Penn National, Santa Anita and Tampa Bay.

Weekend Warrior for Saturday, Jan. 28: Picks for Pegasus World Cup, W.L. McKnight, Gulfstream Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Neolithic (left) is a viable alternative to favorites California Chrome and Arrogate in the Pegasus World Cup.

The brand-new Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park overshadows everything else on the stakes front Saturday, and not just because it is the world’s richest Thoroughbred race with a purse of $12 million. This inaugural Pegasus also features a rematch between Arrogate and Horse of the Year California Chrome, the one-two finishers in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last November, and marks the final start of California Chrome’s stellar career.

Hersh: Fair Grounds horses to watch for week of Jan. 25

Gee Whiz Lil

Trainer: Dallas Keen
Last race: Jan. 19, 4th
Finish: 3rd by 1/2
Beyer: 57

This is a turf horse, and was impressed she rallied as well as she did to finish a close third in an off-turf, short-stretch mile. Seems poised to clear this Louisiana-bred allowance condition back on grass.

Could It Be Me

Trainer: Kathleen O'Connell

Last race: Jan. 8, 6th

Finish: 7th by 5

Beyer: 49

Had an absolutely atrocious trip for the second time in a row in this one, bottled up down inside with no place to go for much of the stretch, seemingly with run.

Rampellini: Oaklawn Horses to Watch for Jan. 25

Elijah

Trainer:  Lynn Chleborad

Last Race: Jan. 17, 2nd

Finish: 7th by 10 3/4

Beyer: 63

He has done his best work on the front end, but stumbled at the start of claiming route and trailed in the mud last time in a race that looks like a toss-out. He was favored, too, over a competitive kind of field, and also was claimed.

Wilburnmoney
Trainer:  Gary Gullo
Last race:  Jan. 15, 8th
Finish:  3rd by 2 1/4
Beyer:  57
Wound up last in the early stages of a New York-bred allowance sprint, and couldn't make progress while stuck in traffic all through the turn before finishing gamely for third behind the two favorites.  Three-year-old filly is in deceptively good form right now.
