Though the three stakes horses I am eager to bet on Saturday at Gulfstream Park quite possibly aren’t the best horses in their races, they do seem to be the runners best played given the circumstances.
All three – Gunnevera in the Holy Bull, Compelled in the Sweetest Chant, and Kitten’s Cat in the Kitten’s Joy – seem probable to start as mild overlays, and the race conditions favor them too. Let’s take a look at the races, beginning with the richest stakes of the day, the Grade 2, $350,000 Holy Bull.
Holy Bull
Race 2
One Sided (#7)
The TimeformUS Pace Projector is predicting that he will be up close early in a situation favoring the front-runners.
Jason Servis gets a 100 TimeformUS Trainer Rating first off the claim.
It’s a good sign that he runs back at the same level without a layoff.

Multiple-stakes cards at Gulfstream and Santa Anita, the seasonal debut of a unanimous 2016 Eclipse Award winner, and three Kentucky Derby points races highlight a busy first Saturday of February.

Blind Ambition
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Last race: Jan. 28, 8th
Finish: 4th by 13 1/4

Like most Tapit offspring, he had issues at the break, stumbling badly to lose his best chance. Rushed up between horses to reach contention on the turn but could not sustain the bid behind a promising runaway winner.
Farewell Time
Trainer: Howard Alonzo
Last race: Jan. 27, 9th
Finish: 5th by 5 3/4
Beyer: 44
First-timer with fast works was said to have good early speed never got to show it after bobbling at the start and getting checked. Ran on decently behind front-running winner. Took some betting first up but night go overlooked second time out.
Out of the Trappe
Young American
Trainer: Ken McPeek
Last Race: Jan. 27, 8th
Finish: 5th by 6 1/4
Beyer: 67
He did well to split a large field in an allowance for 3-year-olds, closing from well back behind a front-running winner. The start came at a mile – a race that ends at the sixteenth pole at Oaklawn. He figures to benefit from more ground when available as his maiden win came at 1 1/16 miles.

Picture Day (#5)
Linda Rice gets a 95 TimeformUS Trainer Rating second off a layoff.
Ran a series of competitive speed figures at Aqueduct before being sent to the sidelines.

Last race: Jan. 18, 10th
Finish: 3rd by 2 3/4

Had almost no chance trying to rally into a controlled pace over a strip that favored speed in her debut, but she did well to get the show. She can run down $16,000 maiden claimers in her return.
