There’s a single Grade 1 Saturday in North America. It’s not the Tampa Bay Derby, but with Kentucky Derby fever heating up, Tampa Bay will get a lot of attention.
The Tampa Bay Derby didn’t do much for me, and while the Hillsborough, the best of the undercard stakes, is an appealing early season filly and mare turf contest, I couldn’t settle on a play. Even sans Hillsborough, this can be a Ladies Day, the focus on female-restricted stakes from coast to coast.
Beholder Mile
GP RACE 9: This turf dash appears wide open, and COPPOLA could record his second consecutive square-priced victory. Normally a front-runner, he came from off the pace to land the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint under a shrewd ride from Edgard Zayas. BIG INVASION took the Grade 2 Nearctic two back in a blanket finish at Woodbine before a troubled neck loss in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Off a fast (96 Beyer) allowance score, KANTHARI should be a speed threat in his stakes debut.
RACE 7: IN A JAM blossomed in his last three outings on the Gulfstream grass, culminating with a gutsy score in a first-level allowance/optional claimer. He’s versatile in terms of running style and could make his stakes debut a winning one. (1)
Each week in this space, the top Beyer performances by maiden winners will be featured and analyzed. Click here for a complete archive.

First route, first turf, first bad trip for this lightly raced 3-year-old gelding. On rail in fifth, blocked into lane, bumped, took up late. Inconclusive performance, can be followed in any Cal-bred race.
RACE 6: RO TOWN is stepping up in class again while seeking her third straight score and should be a speed threat in her debut on turf, for which she’s well bred on the dam’s side. Probable 2023 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly ELYSIAN FIELD, who won the restricted Woodbine Oaks, is a good fit at this level, but she might need one off the five-month layoff.
