Hammersly: Belmont Park pick five for Saturday, Sept. 30

Barbara D. Livingston
Elate earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 98 in the Alabama.

An emerging star who may prove a linchpin and a tough veteran sprinter who might get the right type of setup at a price may be just what you need in a competitive and difficult late pick five at Belmont Park on Saturday. And, of course, there’s always Chad Brown to bank on in the turf legs.

TimeformUS Belmont Horses in Focus for Friday, Sept. 29, 2017

Race 2:

Pocket Player (#5)

Was wide throughout in his last start over an Aqueduct turf course that favors runners that can save ground.

All prior starts came as a 2-year-old, and he has a right to be an improved horse with added maturity.

Returns as a first-time gelding in his first start for the Tom Bush barn.

12-1 on ML

Race 4:

Naples Parade (#1)

Unleashed a furious late rally to nearly get up to win her debut.
