NEW YORK – Although some horsemen feel fresh is best for their Breeders’ Cup horses, there are still important prep races five weeks before the big event.
Santa Anita has five such Grade 1 events Saturday, worth $300,000 each. They are the Awesome Again, the Zenyatta, the Rodeo Drive, the FrontRunner, and the Chandelier. Belmont Park has three Grade 1 stepping-stones to the Breeders’ Cup (along with a Grade 3): the $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, the $400,000 Beldame, and the $350,000 Vosburgh.

Race 2:
Hit the Diamond (#7)
Adds Lasix for the first time.
Is bred for this surface switch – his dam was a synthetic stakes winner that hails from a family of primarily turf horses in the second generation.
DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past five years, Brian Lynch is 5 for 16 ($6.35 ROI) with horses coming off 120- to 240-day layoffs in turf sprints.

He came on strongly from off slow fractions to gamely win his debut in a seven-furlong maiden special for 2-year-olds. The Ontario-bred by Lemon Drop Kid should be a contender in the Cup and Saucer Stakes, which his trainer has won before.

His ability to stalk and pounce will be an asset in this race.
Sprinted for most of his career, but he did run reasonably well going nine furlongs as a 2-year-old.
