Free: How I'll play Santa Anita for Sunday, Oct. 1

ARCADIA, Calif. – Two middle-odds contenders early, and two longshot gambles later, are the overlay focus Sunday at Santa Anita. All four are generous odds, beginning with the first race.

Race 1
It will be a welcome surprise if PISTOL PACKIN ROSE starts as high as her 9-2 morning line. Considering how well she ran last out, third despite a brutal trip, she offers value at 3-1 or higher in this N1X turf route for 3-year-old fillies.

Race 7:
Sweet August Lady (#1)

Ran her best race going one turn at Belmont in early summer.
Was too far back over a very firm course after a poor start last time.
DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past five years, Chad Brown is 16 for 45 (36 percent, $2.94 ROI) with horses going from routes to sprints on turf at Belmont.
6-1 on ML

Race 3:
Avery Island (#6)

Comes out of a pretty lively maiden race, where he took plenty of money.
His dam, Kinda Spicy, was a confirmed router, so he should improve with this stretch-out in distance
** DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past five years, Kiaran McLaughlin is 5 for 16 (31 percent, $2.71 ROI) with 2-year-old maidens stretching out on dirt in their second career starts.
7-2 on ML

King: Keeneland horses to watch for week of Sept. 29

HEAVENLY LOVE
Trainer: Mark Casse
Last race: KD, Sept. 7, 7th
Finish: 1st by 5
Beyer: 78
Either due to improvement as a second-time starter or with a shift to turf, she rolled to a dominant maiden win at Kentucky Downs, coasting over the final furlong with her ears pricked; considered a possible starter for the opening-day Alcibiades at Keeneland, which would mark a return to dirt, a surface on which she was third at Gulfstream first out over the summer.

Beer: Belmont Park horses to watch for week of Sept. 29

Abbreviate
Trainer: Chad Brown
Last race: Sept. 15, 5th
Finish: 1st by 3 1/2
Beyer: 86
Juddmonte homebred filly returned from a layoff after disappointing a bit in her first two starts (not without excuses), and she was sharp while overrunning maidens with a strong stretch kick.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, September 30, 2017 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Our multiple Belmont Park gimmick Pix last week resulted in one exacta and two superfecta payoffs, which is faint praise for our prescience but still not bad if you splurged a bit.

Hammersly: Santa Anita Pick 4 for Saturday, Sept. 30

Benoit & Associates
Bolt d'Oro wins the Del Mar Futurity earlier this month.

While the first three legs of Saturday’s Pick-4 at Santa Anita (races 8-11) may prove fairly formful, an inscrutable final leg - a sprint stakes on the hillside turf course - could be where you find your price.
