Fornatale: How I'll play Belmont Park on Sunday, Oct. 8

With a pair of Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup prep races at Belmont on Sunday, I think I’m justified in turning one of the TVs in my bunker away from the NFL and back where it belongs: on horse racing.

Betting-wise, I’m going to play a Grade 1 double late in the card and let that decide my wagering fate. Let’s start with the seventh race at Belmont, the Frizette for 2-year-old fillies.

King: How I'll play Keeneland on Sunday, Oct. 8

Heavy rain overnight has resulted in a wet main track and the scheduled turf races, besides the Grade 3 Bourbon, being taken off the grass. Some early scratches are in, but horseplayers are advised to keep tabs for more as the day progresses.

My two favorite races today are the sixth, an optional claimer for sprinters, and the ninth, the Spinster – contests in which both of my top selections are winners over muddy or sloppy tracks.

Race 1:
Silver Fern (#6)

Figures to offer value since likely favorite Radiant Beauty will be an underlay.
Is bred to handle turf, since her dam has produced two turf stakes winners and is a full sister to a Group 1 winner on grass.
DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past five years, Bill Mott is 5 for 21 (24 percent, $4.55 ROI) with second-time starters going from dirt sprints to turf routes in maiden special weight races.
