BreezeFigs Quick-Pix, Saturday, May 12, 2018 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Our Pix last week resulted in a one-paced effort from Storming Lady and a promising effort after a tough trip by Mach Speed, whom we would tab back at the same level. Overall, however, it was a very decent week for BreezeFigs maidens as well as those which have gone on to be stakes horses.

Weekend Warrior for Saturday, May 12: Picks for Man O' War Stakes, Peter Pan Stakes, Hanshin Cup

Coady Photography
High North snapped his slump with a victory in the Northern Spur.

What could have been a stakes void on the Saturday between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness is instead filled by Belmont Park, which offers five stakes, four of them graded, led by the Grade 1, $700,000 Man o’ War and the Grade 3, $350,000 Peter Pan. The Peter Pan is the traditional New York springboard to the Belmont Stakes.

The only other graded stakes Saturday are two Grade 3, $100,000 races: the Lazaro Barrera at Santa Anita, and the Hanshin Cup at Arlington.

LOVING MOMENT
Trainer: Phil D’Amato
Last race: May 4, race 9
Finish: Seventh by four lengths
Beyer: 59

Heavily favored maiden turf filly had a brutal trip as rider stayed inside rather than find position outside in clear. Got stopped cold in stretch traffic, never had a prayer. Toss this.

Beer: Belmont Park horses to watch for week of May 7, 2018

WONDERFUL LIGHT
Trainer: Michelle Nevin
Last race: May 5, 9th
Finish: 1st by 1 ¾
Beyer: 96
Lightly raced sprinter has run faster than this in the past, but this was a strong race off a short layoff as he came home gamely to close down a loose-on-the-lead rival while looking like stakes competition may be in his future.
