Hersh: Santa Anita late pick five for Saturday, March 2, 2019

Singling a heavy favorite in the pick five still gives ample room to hit a few decent prices and win something meaningful if you hit. And while I’ll single one heavy favorite in the late 50-cent pick five Saturday at Santa Anita, I’ll also single another horse in the sequence who’s 8-1 on the morning line.

Race 2: Questeq (#4)

Did well to be second last time while racing over a speed- and rail-biased surface.

The Pace Projector is predicting a situation favoring horses on or near the lead, and she is likely to be in front.

Is in top form right now for John Toscano and will be an overlay due to the low-percentage rider.

Watchmaker: Gulfstream pick five play for Saturday, March 2, 2019

What do you do with a late pick 4 sequence like the one Saturday at Gulfstream, where in the second leg you have a prohibitive favorite and near-universal single who is also an extremely likely winner in Jaywalk?

You bet the late pick 5 instead.

That one extra race exponentially increases payoffs, even in Jaywalk-like situations.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, March 2, 2019 by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

The “slight class edge” we liked in Get the Goodies last week was magnified when our other Pick Shilah Baby scratched out and our other key Fleeterthan went out and fried herself, fading to complete the trifecta. Oh, did we mention that Get the Goodies came through with her class edge by more than seven lengths in a sparkling performance at a generous $6.80? There you go.

Race 5: Take Your Place (#4)

Was wide against a strong rail bias two back, running deceptively well to be third.

Gets significant class relief after facing much tougher optional claiming foes in his last two starts.

His recent TimeformUS Speed Figures of 106 and 103 stack up favorably against the shorter prices in this field.

5-1 on ML

Free: Santa Anita preview for Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019

Turf racing has increased in popularity, and so has the volume of turf races at Santa Anita. Despite above-average rainfall and 18 scheduled turf races moved to the main track, Santa Anita ran a higher percentage of turf races the first two months of the meet than any first two months in track history. (Daily Racing Form turf-dirt records started in 1991.)

Nearly 34 percent of races this winter were on turf (113 of 333), which is the highest percentage for the first two months of a winter meet since record-keeping began nearly 30 years ago.

Off six months, this Cal-bred N1X ran the race of his career in a fast turf mile. Late-developing 4-year-old finally is putting it together, and should be tough next time vs. similar.
