A mare making her career swansong, fillies who ran into monster Newspaperofrecord at the Breeders’ Cup, a sprinter who beat top-class sprinter Imperial Hint and stretches out for the first time, a number of Chad Brown runners (and you know how scary they can be) and 3-year-olds looking to stay on the Kentucky Derby trail add up to an intriguing Pick-5 at Tampa (races 7-11).

Race 5: Shimmering Moon (#2)
Was wide against a strong rail bias last time in an effort that isn’t nearly as bad as it seems.
Ran respectably against tougher open N1X allowance foes in her prior starts.
Is one of the few horses with the speed to stay close to favored Leah’s Dream in a race predicated to favor the leaders.

The suspension of racing at Santa Anita certainly took some wind out of the sails of what was expected to be a very big Saturday of stakes racing. But Tampa Bay Downs and Aqueduct will still offer stakes-loaded cards.

The Grade 2, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby is the main event at Tampa, where four other stakes will be run, most notably the Grade 2, $225,000 Hillsborough. The Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham is the feature at Aqueduct and is supported by three other stakes, including the Grade 3, $200,000 Tom Fool, and the $250,000 Busher.

More wet weather in the forecast makes plotting out wagers ahead of Sunday’s card at Santa Anita more difficult than it already would be. Because of the potential for more precipitation, I’ll be avoiding the turf races entirely for this exercise; below are a few runners to consider Sunday scheduled to run on the main track.

RACE 1

Race 3: Aristocratic (#5)

Set an insanely fast pace in his first start for Chris Englehart, getting a massive 155 TimeformUS pace figure for his opening quarter.

The 118 TimeformUS Speed Figure that he earned in that most recent start is easily the fastest of any in this field.

Is dropping in class to meet softer foes this time.

The weather forecast is for another beautiful Sunday in South Florida. I’m going to launch the early pick five with back-to-back viable singles so that I can hit the beach by midafternoon if things go awry early with the ticket.

INDYGITA (2) is taking a noteworthy drop in the opener, going from optional-starter company to $16,000 after being a fringe player in first-level allowance company. Jose Ortiz is the perfect pilot to make the most of her tactical speed in this one-mile turf tilt.
