NEW YORK – Belmont Park is stepping up Saturday to fill the stakes void on the weekend between the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. The track is offering five stakes, four of which are graded, led by the Grade 1, $700,000 Man o’ War and the Grade 3, $300,000 Peter Pan, a local springboard to the Belmont Stakes. Belmont’s other two graded events – both Grade 3 races with $200,000 purses – are the Beaugay and the Vagrancy.
Saturday’s two remaining graded races – both Grade 3, $100,000 events – are the Hanshin Cup at Arlington and the Santa Barbara at Santa Anita.
Race 1: Orbolution (#2)
Was stymied in behind tiring runners for the entire stretch drive of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last time.
Has been training strongly for her return at Palm Beach Downs.
DRF Formulator Fact: Over the past 5 years, Todd Pletcher is 8 for 17 (47 percent, $4.55 ROI) with horses coming off layoffs of 300 days or more in turf routes.

Before previewing Sunday at Santa Anita, quick notes regarding the Kentucky Derby:
* Maximum Security’s “victory” was superb. Under pressure throughout, only the second route of his career, seemingly defeated into the lane, “won” going away. Impressive.
* Game Winner’s wide-trip sixth was noteworthy. He could have made it a race.
* Churchill Downs stewards made the right call. Maximum Security had to come down.

I found this to be one of the most confusing races on the card. Merely identifying a morning-line favorite was a struggle, and I don’t even have much confidence that I’ve sorted that out properly. Playwright and Big Gemmy participated on Saturday, so they will scratch out of this spot.

Race 3: Starlite Mission (#2)
Seemed to improve in her first start off the claim for Dave Cannizzo off declining form.
Would have been a clear second last time if she had not encountered traffic while rallying in the stretch.
Cannizzo gets an 85 TimeformUS Trainer Rating with horses moving from allowance to claiming company.
