Bernier: How I'll play Belmont Park on Sunday, May 12, 2019

A soggy Mother’s Day makes it a tough day to handicap racing at Belmont Park; the three races scheduled for the grass have been taken off, and the main track is guaranteed to be an off track. I believe it’s a safe and smart idea to tread lightly when it comes to off tracks,  but if you’re inclined to play on this Mother’s Day, here are some horses to consider.

Race 6: Rockin Jo (#2)
The Pace Projector is predicting that he will play out as the main speed, and he does best when able to control the pace.
Has done better than it appears in his turf races, running the best race of his life going a mile over this Widener course.
Is claimed by under-the-radar trainer Dennis Lalman, who can do very well off the claim.

Beer: How I'd play Belmont Park for Saturday, May 11, 2019

Race 1:  The card kicks off with the Grade 3 Vagrancy. It pulled a field of only five fillies and mares and is led by the returning #4 Separationofpowers. A Grade 1 winner at both 2 and 3, Separationofpowers has had a chip removed from an ankle since she was last seen on the track finishing fourth in the Cotillion.

Race 1: Pacific Gale (#1)
Her 125 TimeformUS Speed Figure earned last time out is the highest in the field.
Possesses the tactical speed to sit a good trip in a largely paceless affair.
Strong worktab since her last race suggests that she may be sitting on another big effort.

Goulding: Santa Anita late pick four for Saturday, May 11, 2019

Ce Ce looks like a horse with a bright future and can be used as a single in the late pick four at Santa Anita on Saturday. Here’s a look at the sequence.

Race 6: (3) Ce Ce couldn’t have been more impressive winning her debut in a key race for trainer Michael McCarthy. The daughter of Elusive Quality easily handled 3-5 favorite Honeyfromthesouth, who finished more than eight lengths clear of the third-place finisher. She looks like a standout single.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, May 11, 2019, by Bob Fierro & Jay Kilgore

Wasn’t a very good Derby Day for Pix either. While one of our gimmick plays at Santa Anita managed to fill out a huge superfecta, our 2-year-old pounce flounced. Still, it was a very good day for other BreezeFigs runners as seven of the 3-year-olds broke their maidens with two of them in a dead heat at Belmont in addition to three winners at Santa Anita and solos at Mountaineer and Tampa.

Race 7: Achilles Warrior (#4)
Hinted at improved form over the winter by outworking classy stablemate Strike Power at Gulfstream.
Put forth best effort of his career off the layoff last time.
The Pace Projector is predicting that he will be on the lead in a situation favoring the front-runner.
