Weekend GamePlan for Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019: Picks for Jockey Club Gold Cup, Lukas Classic, and Japan Turf Cup

Barbara D. Livingston
Preservationist (left) could offer some value in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Saturday at Belmont Park.

If you combined the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Awesome Again, the two Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic preps scheduled for Saturday, you’d have a hell of a race. But then I guess that’s what the Breeders’ Cup itself is for.

DR VUNNO
Trainer: Stacy Machiz
Date: Sept. 21, 4th
Finish: 7th by 7 1/2
Beyer: 52
Off the board yet again in this route but hoping the connections see fit to try sprinting again, as he ran deceptively well in a one-turn turf race earlier this year; will be a huge price, too.

Race 6: Tricky Magician (#7)
Faced a tougher field and wasn’t disgraced two back at Woodbine.
Was hindered by the distance last time and should appreciate a turn-back here.
Projects to get a good stalking trip this time.

Merely has to transfer her turf form to dirt to beat this field.
