Maiden races generate minimal publicity, and rarely attract media coverage. It’s not a complaint. I like maidens. Everyone should. (The Santa Ysabel Stakes is Sunday’s DRF Race of the Day. Get free Formulator PPs for the race here.)
Racing programs would crumble without maidens. This winter at Santa Anita, 37 percent of all races have been for maidens (103 of 275, through Feb. 28). The tilt is especially pronounced away from stakes-charged weekend cards.

Here’s an irony: There were three races on the Aqueduct card with BreezeFigs maidens entered, two of which featured first-timers with excellent profiles—and we picked the wrong race to write up with the first-timers. The other one won and so did the second-time starter in the other race. In our Pick, Three’s Trouble lived up to his name getting into trouble three times before coming up to get a piece of the superfecta nipping our other gimmick play Viking Zim for those honors.

Page through your memory indices and recall where things stood in March 2020. Racing-wise things were truly crazy, whole populations of horses stranded at tracks, unable to ship, race meets winking out and going dark mid-season. Horse people had no idea what coming months might bring. Nothing was certain; anything seemed possible.
A year later, racing is back to seasonal rhythms. Spectators are trickling into stands, the Triple Crown trail is snaking toward spring, and stakes races are piled atop one another coast to coast on Saturday.
