Tyler Baze returning to the saddle at Turf Paradise, Hollywood Park

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Tyler Baze, sidelined since late July because of injury, is scheduled to resume riding at Turf Paradise on Monday and Wednesday and at Hollywood Park on Thursday, he said on Sunday.

Baze suffered facial injuries in an incident behind the gate at Del Mar last July, and needed several months to recover. For the last month, he has worked horses for trainers Mike Chambers and Kevin Lewis at Turf Paradise, preparing for a return.

Kentucky Derby: Jaycito declared from race

A bruised foot will keep Jaycito from starting in the Kentucky Derby.

Making official what had seemed obvious for more than a week, trainer Bob Baffert on Sunday announced that Jaycito would not make this year's Kentucky Derby on May 7, owing to a foot bruise that has prevented the colt from working for more than three weeks.

"You've got the super-duper official word," Baffert said Sunday morning from his home near Santa Anita.

Stallings, former jockey and racing official, dies

Former jockey and racing official William E. Stallings, 65, died Tuesday following a heart attack.

Stallings, a Colorado state high school wrestling champion, began his riding career in 1963. Stallings was the Turf Paradise jockey of the year in 1975 and Arizona rider of the year in 1980 in his final year of riding. He was also one of the winningest jockeys on the Northern California fair circuit in the 1960s and 70s.

Kentucky Derby: Valenzuela to ride Comma to the Top

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Patrick Valenzuela will ride Santa Anita Derby runner-up Comma to the Top in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 7, co-owner Gary Barber said at Hollywood Park on Saturday. The Kentucky Derby will be the first time that Valenzuela has ridden Comma to the Top.

Woodbine: Bill Marko, trained champions, dies

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Former trainer Bill Marko, whose charges included champions Deputy Minister and Frost King, collapsed and died in the backstretch kitchen at Woodbine Racetrack early Saturday afternoon. He was 73.

The cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack.

Marko trained more than 500 winners and 48 stakes winners in a career that ran from 1976 through 1999. He was the Sovereign Award winner as Canada's outstanding trainer in 1982 and 1983.

One bettor finds that medication has its place

In regard to the April 13 article "Jockey Club favors drug action," regarding the elimination of raceday medication, and the April 20 "HBPA calls for debate on medication ban," recounting some horsemen's stance on the issue, I remember New York Racing Association competition before medication was allowed. Races were very unpredictable. A horse repeating a great performance was not the norm. Consistency did not exist.

Keeneland to start account-wagering service.

Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky., will launch a branded account-wagering service by its next live racing meet in October, the racetrack announced on Friday.

The service, which will rely on Twinspires.com, the account-wagering company owned by Churchill Downs Inc., to provide bet-processing and account-management operations, will allow customers to bet on Keeneland’s races and on races from other tracks, Keeneland said, potentially opening up a new revenue source for the track.

Kentucky Derby: Santiva to have Bridgmohan aboard

Shaun Bridgmohan will ride Santiva in the May 7 Kentucky Derby, reuniting the team that won the Kentucky Jockey Club over the Churchill Downs track last fall, trainer Eddie Kenneally said Friday.

Santiva most recently finished ninth as the favorite in last Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes, in which he was the favorite. He was ridden that day by Julien Leparoux, whose Derby mount is Dialed In, the likely favorite for the race.
