Saratoga: Blind Luck, Havre de Grace both headed to New York

Blind Luck and Havre de Grace are likely headed to Saratoga for their next starts, but the two dynamic fillies might not end up in the same race, meaning round 7 in this terrific rivalry may have to wait for the fall.

Havre de Grace, beaten a nose by Blind Luck in Saturday’s $750,000 Delaware Handicap, could make her next start against males in the Grade 1, $750,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 3, owner Rick Porter said Monday. The Woodward is run at 1 1/8 miles.

Racing commissioners schedule hearing on Lasix

A standing committee of an organization representing state racing commissions has scheduled a meeting for July 26 to examine issues related to the raceday use of furosemide in North American racing, the organization, the Association of Racing Commissioners International, announced on Monday.

Brown Bess, champion turf mare, dead at 29

Brown Bess, the champion turf female of 1989 who was affectionately known as Mighty Mite to her California fans, was euthanized on July 15 because of complications from colic, according to the farm where she was boarded. She was 29, and was buried at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., where she had been based for the past several years.

Horse racing can’t spring any upsets at ESPN’s ESPY awards

There was a lot of chalk at the ESPYs this year, which meant no extra love for horse racing.

While horse racing-related nominations were put up in both the Best Sports Movie and Best Upset categories of ESPN’s annual Excellence in Sport Performance Yearly awards, the only racing winner came out of the Best Jockey category.

Kentucky Derby-winning jockey John Velazquez was crowned as the best jockey during the ceremonies, which were hosted in Los Angeles by actor and comedian Seth Myers.

Breeders' Cup to ban raceday medication in juvenile races

All horses who are entered in the five Breeders' Cup races for juveniles in 2012 will be prohibited from using the diuretic Lasix on race day to treat bleeding in the lungs under a policy adopted by the Breeders' Cup on Thursday that will lead to the ban of all raceday drugs at the organization's year-end event by 2013, the organization said.
