Red Mile shows interest in adding Instant Racing slot machines

The Red Mile, a harness track in downtown Lexington, Ky., has received approval from the state for tax subsidies related to a redevelopment that would include a facility for gambling machines, but track officials have said they will wait for a ruling from a state appeals court on the legality of the machines before applying for a license.

Del Mar: Hollendorfer closing in on 6,000th win

DEL MAR, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is within two victories of the 6,000th of his career, and he has a chance to reach that milestone with three starters at Del Mar on Wednesday.

Hollendorfer, 65, is on the verge of becoming the fourth trainer in history to win 6,000 or more races, joining Dale Baird (9,445), Jack Van Berg (6,406), and King Leatherbury (6,324) in that elite group.

Rick Porter, 71, is a native of Wilmington, Del., and resides in Florida. Porter’s business, Porter Automotive Group, was started by his grandfather in 1925. Porter operates Fox Hill Farms, which has campaigned such standouts as Jostle, Round Pond, Hard Spun, Eight Belles, and Kodiak Kowboy. This year’s stable star is Havre de Grace, whose rivalry with Blind Luck has captivated racing fans, and who is scheduled to face males in the Woodward Stakes on Sept. 3 at Saratoga.

University of Louisville director fired after embezzlement allegation

The senior program director at the University of Louisville’s Equine Industry Program in Kentucky has been fired after being accused by the university of embezzling more than $450,000 from the program, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Jim Dandy winner Kensei euthanized

Kensei, winner of the Grade 2 Jim Dandy in 2009, was euthanized after he sustained a broken right front cannon bone during a routine gallop at Belmont Park Tuesday, according to a New York Racing Association press release.

Kensei, a 5-year-old son of Mr. Greeley owned by Stonestreet Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, had a record of 5 wins, 4 seconds, and 2 thirds from 18 starts and earned $751,364. He won the Grade 2 Dwyer at Belmont in 2009 and the Grade 3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park earlier this summer.

Elmhurst, winner of '97 BC Sprint, relocating to Kentucky retirement home

Elmhurst, millionaire winner of the 1997 Breeders’ Cup Sprint for Evergreen Farm and trainer Jenine Sahadi, will relocate from California to the Our Mims Retirement Haven in Paris, Ky. A 21-year-old Wild Again gelding, Elmhurst has been under the care of Rocking Horse Ranch in El Cajon, Calif., since 2008.

New Jersey breeders appeal governor's subsidy veto

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of New Jersey has filed a legal challenge to a veto that Gov. Chris Christie exercised earlier this summer that nullified the distribution of $15 million in potential subsidies to the state’s Thoroughbred and Standardbred industries.

Rosemary Homeister has first child

Rosemary Homeister Jr., the second-leading female jockey all-time in North America, had her first child Sunday, giving birth to a daughter, Victoria Rose.

Homeister’s boyfriend, fellow jockey Irwin Rosendo, is the baby’s father. Rosendo is currently riding at Parx and Penn National in Pennsylvania.
