Breeders' Cup changing security firms

Breeders' Cup Ltd. has notified the Thoroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau that it will not use its services for security during the two-day event at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4-5 this year, according to officials with the organizations.

Breeders' Cup has decided to take its security operation "in-house," according to Chris Scherf, the executive vice president of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, which operates the protective bureau. The bureau's "big-event team" had provided security services for the Breeders' Cup since 2005, Scherf said.

In Flat Out, Dickey finally has his big horse

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Scooter Dickey has Flat Out in peak racing condition after an injury-riddled stretch that saw the horse make just three starts from April 2009 to May 2011.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After a half-century in racing, most of them as a trainer, Charles “Scooter” Dickey sent out all of five winners in 2007 and two in 2008. His career arc wasn’t arcing very high in his sunset years, and with his wife, Dana, struggling at home with a debilitating disease, the prospects for reviving a stagnant career were dim.

“Times were pretty tough,” said Dickey, a 70-year-old native of Kansas who said he got a nickname that stuck because he scooted and didn’t crawl as a baby.
