Maryland official orders arbitration on Rosecroft simulcasting

Maryland’s Labor Secretary has ordered the state’s Thoroughbred and Standardbred representatives to consent to binding arbitration to resolve a dispute over the availability of Thoroughbred simulcasts at Rosecroft Raceway, the state’s harness track.

Alexander Sanchez signed the order this week after the two horsemen’s groups could not resolve the dispute by a state-imposed deadline of Oct. 1. The deadline was contained in a bill passed earlier this year that allowed the state’s tracks to use slot-machine subsidies for operating expenses, rather than capital-improvement projects.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile field remains in flux

Tom Keyser
Jackson Bend is an early favorite for the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

The field for the $1 million Dirt Mile remains very much in flux as some of the would-be top contenders remain under consideration for other races as well.

Kelso winner Uncle Mo is a virtual certainty to run in the Classic, but his connections want to see him train before completely ruling out the Dirt Mile. Provided he runs in the Classic, that could send a bevy of horses into the Dirt Mile, where the early favorite is Jackson Bend, based on his runner-up finish to Uncle Mo in the Kelso and his Grade 1 Forego victory.

Rahy leaves behind special memories of a rare breed

I just wanted to take a moment and thank the literally hundreds of people who called, e-mailed, posted on social media, or sought us out in person to convey their condolences for the death of longtime Three Chimneys stallion-turned-pensioner Rahy ("Influential stallion Rahy dead at 26," Sept. 24). He was so loved, respected, and revered by the Three Chimneys team. You don't even know how much the sentiments you conveyed mean to all of us.

Breeders' Cup changing security firms

Breeders' Cup Ltd. has notified the Thoroughbred Racing and Protective Bureau that it will not use its services for security during the two-day event at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4-5 this year, according to officials with the organizations.

The bureau's "big-event team" had provided security services for the Breeders' Cup since 2005, Scherf said.
