Dutrow penalty seems excessive in overall context

Having known the Dutrow family (parents Dickie and Vicky) since 1977, and Rick and his brothers Tony and Chip since 1985, I feel compelled to comment on the severe punishment meted out to him by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board ("Dutrow banned 10 years," Oct. 14).

Massachusetts Senate passes casino/slots bill

The Massachusetts Senate on Thursday approved a bill allowing for three casinos and one slots parlor in the state, setting the stage for Suffolk Downs to bid on a license reserved for the Boston area.

The Senate bill, which was approved by a vote of 24-14, is similar to a bill that passed overwhelmingly in the House in September, aside from some minor differences that are expected to be ironed out in conference before being sent to Gov. Deval Patrick, who supports the legislation.

Dutrow tries to maintain business as usual

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The dark gray clouds that hung above Aqueduct Thursday morning were an appropriate backdrop as trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., standing along the outside rail, watched a set of horses gallop by following their training sessions.

It was the morning after the New York State Racing and Wagering Board voted to revoke his trainer’s license for a minimum of 10 years and Dutrow – with training chart in hand and cell phone pressed against his ear – was attempting to go about business as usual.

“I’m trying to. It’s not easy, but I’m trying to,” Dutrow said.
