2012 Preakness: Cleaner trip may be all Went the Day Well needs

Barbara D. Livingston
Went the Day Well returns to be unsaddled after a troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby.

Went the Day Well has been playing catch up since he arrived in this country and was remanded to quarantine for nearly two weeks. He has certainly made up for lost time – he nearly gave his connections a second straight victory in the Kentucky Derby on May 5 – and he still appears to have plenty of upside, which is one reason why he is being wheeled back in the 137th Preakness Stakes next Saturday at Pimlico.

Ajax Downs starting Quarter Horse meet

Ajax Downs, the Quarter Horse racetrack located some 35 miles east of Woodbine, will begin its 40-day meeting on Tuesday.

Formally known as Picov Downs, Ajax Downs began its current incarnation in 2009 and has boomed because of the presence of some 800 ontrack slot machines.

The future of that operation now is in jeopardy as the slots at Ajax, along with those at other Ontario racetracks under revenue-sharing agreements with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, are slated to be phased out by March 31, 2013.
